Speakers at a seminar have said that the media’s role was crucial in highlighting inequalities and injustices besides creating an environment for a peaceful society.
They were speaking at an event, organised by Shahoor Foundation — a peace focused social organisation, on the role of media in society.
Politicians, members of civil society and journalists spoke on the occasion.
Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Minister for Rehabilitation Majid Khan said that Pakistan was passing through a critical juncture facing multi-facet internal and external challenges.
“On the one hand, India is creating serious security challenges by escalating tension on the Line of Control (LoC) and the working boundary and on the other had, our brave forces are engaged in rooting out the menace of terrorism from the country,” he said.
“In this backdrop, the role of the media is significant to support the efforts of our security forces,” the minister said.
Describing the media as a crucial pillar of state, Khan said that the AJK government was utilising all available resources to groom the media workers to work responsibly, objectively and independently while keeping in view the challenges facing the country.
He said that the AJK government will leave no stone unturned to habilitate the Kashmiri refuges of 1989.
The minister said that the AJK government was intends to work on a legislation to bring reforms in the media sector including creating better working environment for journalists and their capacity building.
He said that the government was taking tangible measures to resolve the problems being faced by the journalists.
Kashmir Refugee Council representative Muzammal Aslam said that the AJK media has played a vanguard role in highlighting the Kashmiri peoples’ struggle for their right to self-determination.
He said that Kashmir struggle needs to be highlighted in its true perspective and keeping in view the changed global scenario.
