The series was scheduled from August 17 to September 17 in Zimbabwe, but a Pakistan Cricket Board official told ESPNcricinfo the series had been deferred indefinitely.
"The decision was taken unanimously and in a cordial manner," the official said.
Although no reason was given for the suspension of the series, some claim Pakistan does not want to endanger its chances for the 2017 Champions Trophy.
"Both boards now will look for another window other than August-September this year."
Zimbabwe toured Pakistan in May this year, allowing the latter to hold its first domestic international series in seven years. Pakistan had intended to play the limited-overs series in Zimbabwe in August in order to show their appreciation and return in kind the gesture.
Recently, Pakistan won their ODI series against Sri Lanka and consequently moved from ninth to eighth in the ICC rankings.
Zimbabwe Cricket Association did not respond when contacted by ESPNcricinfo.
