ECP seeks to delay LG polls by one month

ECP has requested SC to allow LG polls to be postponed due to floods and incomplete preparations

Election Commission Pakistan (ECP) on Friday sought to delay local government polls in Punjab and Sindh by one month, Express News reported.  

While briefing the Standing Committee on Parliamentary Affairs, Secretary ECP Babar Yaqoob Fateh requested that elections should be postponed by one more month due to floods and incomplete preparations.

Earlier, election authorities had approached the Supreme Court seeking permission to hold local government polls in Punjab and Sindh in phases. The request came after massive administrative mismanagement was witnessed during the LG elections in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa in May this year.

Sources in the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) told The Express Tribune that a petition has been filed in the apex court before the Eid holidays. It requested the top court allow the ECP to hold LG elections in phases. Under the Supreme Court orders, the ECP should hold the long-delayed LG polls in Punjab and Sindh on September 20.
