Bahria Town: Stay against luxury tax extended

LAHORE: Lahore High Court on Thursday extended a stay order against the recovery of luxury tax from Bahria Town, on Bilawal House constructed for Pakistan Peoples Party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari. Bahria Foundation chairman Malik Riaz and Bahria Town’s administration had challenged the provincial government’s notice regarding recovery of Rs3.6 million levied on Bilawal House. The petitioner said the government had already been collecting property tax. He said levying luxury tax amounted to double taxation, which was illegal. He asked the court to set aside the luxury tax. A division bench headed by Justice Shahid Jamil Khan adjourned hearing till September 16 and directed the Excise and Taxation Department to submit a detailed reply on the matter.
