Queen drives onto grass to avoid hitting family

The monarch was driving down Long Walk when she found her path blocked by a couple walking with their two children

Britain’s reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, was seen driving to church on Sunday when she veered onto the grass edge to avoid hitting a young family.

The monarch was driving a Jaguar X-type estate down Long Walk on the Windsor Great Park when she found her path blocked by a couple walking with their two children. The queen was clearly in a hurry as she diverted around the family but did smile and wave at the strolling family.

Scarlett Vincent, 23, and Toby Core, 30, were visiting the park with their 11-month-old son and were in fits when they saw who it was.

"We did not realise she was staying at Windsor Castle that weekend so we were so surprised when it happened. We didn’t actually have time to get out of the way as we were in a world of our own so she had to swerve around us,’ Scarlett Vincent said.

"Toby was pushing the trike and I was pushing Teddy’s pram when I realised what had happened. I turned to him and just said ‘Oh my god, it’s the Queen’. He was as shocked and surprised as I was. I pointed at the car and she just smiled at us and waved," she continued.

The Queen is the only person in the UK who is allowed to drive without a licence and is also the only person allowed to drive down the 2.6 mile Long Walk apart from park rangers.

She is frequently seen driving on her Sandringham estate and often drives to the church near the Royal Lodge on the Windsor estate. During the Second World War, the Queen spent time as a driver and mechanic in the Women’s Auxillary Territorial Service.

In a recent spate of controversy, a home movie of Britain’s royals was leaked a few days ago. In the movie, the Queen, as a child, was seen giving a Nazi salute.
