KARACHI:

The Sindh High Court has called comments from the chairperson of National Accountability Bureau (Nab), its provincial director-general and its deputy director on a bail petition of the chairperson of Benazir Housing Cell, Syed Manzar Abbas.

Abbas is behind bars for his alleged involvement in the misappropriation of Rs367.5 million. Headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, a division bench issued a notice to the Nab deputy prosecutor-general to file the comments of the authorities by July 27.

Abbas requested the court for bail in the corruption cases. The investigator alleged that Abbas embezzled funds meant for construction of low-cost houses.

Refuting the allegations, it was argued that the registration of corruption cases against Abbas and his subsequent arrest were unlawful.

The counsel, therefore, pleaded that the court declare the corruption charges against the petitioner unconstitutional and illegal. The court was further requested to grant bail to the petitioner.
