KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) has called comments from the provincial advocate-general, the Rangers director-general and others on petition seeking the registration of an FIR of custodial death of the Sunnit Ittehad Council (SIC) leader Tariq Mehboob against the paramilitary troops and prison officials.

The victim's brother, Athar Mehboob, had taken the provincial home secretary, the Rangers DG, the IG and others to the court to seek the registration of a murder case against them. He claimed that his brother, Tariq Mehboob, was detained by the Rangers under terrorism charges on April 11 from the limits of the New Town police station. Tariq later died during detention.

Athar told the judges that they had approached the New Town police to lodge a case but the officials refused to entertain their plea against Rangers officials and jail authorities.

A division bench, headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, issued notices to the respondents to file their comments to the allegations contained in the petition.
