KARACHI:

The general public was stopped from entering Karachi Zoo when former president Asif Ali Zardari's daughter, Aseefa Bhutto Zardari, visited the facility.

It was first time that the doors of the zoo were closed for visitors while a VIP was visiting. Chief ministers and other VIPs have visited the zoo but we have never closed its doors, an official of the Karachi Zoo told The Express Tribune. He said that the zoo administration was not responsible for restricting public access, that had been done by security personnel.

Aseefa interacted with a few people in the zoo, took photos of the animals and spent more than half an hour there.

In a Twitter post she said that she had met some families who were having a picnic and also inquired about the health of the animals. Security was beefed up around the zoo before and during her visit.

There was no rush of visitors when Aseefa arrived at the zoo, but families from outside of Karachi and elderly people from nearby areas were seen being turned away at the zoo gates. "Contrary to media reports, no people were stopped from entering the zoo. I interacted with the general public," said Aseefa in a Twitter post.
