We need dams

Letter June 25, 2015
It looks like a distant dream that any democratic government would be able to build major dams

LAHORE: This is not the first time that we are facing a scorching summer and it won’t be the last one. Every year, summer comes along and heightens the suffering of ordinary people. This is due to the bad governance of successive governments both at the federal and provincial levels. They have failed to do anything about the problem of power cuts, despite their promises. The same can be said about the way floods are handled, and I am afraid this year won’t be any different from the last one, once monsoon season hits this part of the world.

The only way to redemption is to build as many dams as we can. It is unfortunate or rather ironic that whatever few dams we have, were built during the rule of dictators. So far, it looks like a distant dream that any democratic government would be able to build major dams. Our government needs to set its priorities right. It needs to understand that metro buses and orange line projects are not the primary needs of the people, but that dams are.
