Sindh to give 9,000 acres to Pakistan Army

Published: June 20, 2015

KARACHI: The Sindh government will allocate 9,000 acres of forest land in Shikarpur district to Pakistan Army for distribution among the heirs of martyred soldiers and injured war veterans.

Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah took this decision while presiding over a meeting at the CM House on Friday.

According to the chief minister, the army had asked the Sindh government for allotment of 35,521 acres land in Garhi Yasin, Shikarpur, in 2001. The file had been moving from one office to another.

“Since the request has been made for the rehabilitation of the families of martyrs and war-wounded military personnel, this request must be honoured,” he said.

Forest Minister Gianchand Israni said the land in question was located in the Golo Daro area of Garhi Yasin.

Around 5,000 acres of this land was recently retrieved by the Rangers from illegal occupation of some local influential, he said.

Out of the 25,000 acres of forest land, 5,000 acres belongs to private owners, whereas 9,000 acres was available, for which the forest department has no objection, Israni said.Chief Secretary Siddiq Memon said the army’s request for land was for the rehabilitation of families of 500 martyrs, of whom 200 were from Sindh. “Since the request is genuine, it should be entertained,” he was of the view.

Shoaib Siddiqui, senior member of Board of Revenue, said forest land could only be allotted for agricultural purposes under the rules.  “As Pakistan Army has already made a request to use it for agriculture purposes, the government was authorised to allot the land,” he claimed.

Forest Secretary Sajjad Abbasi said under the policy, the lease holder of the forest land was bound to keep the forest on 20% of the total holdings and cultivate on 80%.

The chief minister approved the allotment of the land to Pakistan Army and directed the chief secretary to move the summary for approval.

The meeting was also attended by Principal Secretary to CM Alamuddin Bullo, Finance Secretary Sohail Rajput and other officers.

Forestry must be preserved , not “gifted” to the arny for agriculture . The army has already ruined the ecology of pakistan ( look at the way they uprooted all the trees during Musharraf’s time to expand DHA Lahore all the way to the Indian border).

Supreme court must take notice. This is when I miss Ch. Iftikhar..,

Less than 3 percent of land is forestry in Pakistan and we are just gifting it??? That too after increasing the budget of army to usd 7bio and their pensions bring mingled with the civilian poll.
Seems we are still in colonial days . This is true corruption. Recommend

Sindh’s land is forcefully being grabbed; it wasn’t happily given by Sindh’s government. Baluchistan has already been conquered, and Pakhtoonkhawa is being conquered in the guise of so called operation against terrorism. When will people of smaller provinces wake up?Recommend

Pakhtoons, Sindhis, Urdu Speakers and Baluchis need to wake up, stop fighting with each other and realise where this strategy of ‘divide and conquer’ is coming from. Wake up and get above your petty differences or the powers from the bigger province will eat you alive one by one. You don’t have too long now. It’s now or never.Recommend

Not many and yet Sindh gives the bulk of revenue as well as resources, gas etc. On top it now has to surrender its land too. The big brother is shamelessly looting from both hands.Recommend

When political leaders criticize, Dharana and agitate against President, PM or CM they are never called traitors or they are not against Pakistan. Of course all political leaders criticize bitterly the elected leaders and govt of Pakistan but nobody calls them against the country or traitors.
Yet when somebody talks against the corruption, accesses or land grabbing of past or present generals they are targeted as anti army or against Pakistan. Nobody ever targets foot soldiers or those defending our borders. We all salute them just like nobody ever talked against navy or air force because they never committed high treason or broke constitution. We have to separate the usurpers from the patriotic armed forces who are as poor as civilians. Opposing the PM, CM or army general is not the same as treason against the country. Recommend

@Blithe: Just for your information, the million plus acres of land that the forest department of Sindh owns, has nearly all been occupied by influentials. So if any one thinks this land is under the cover of forests is sadly mistaken.

PPP along with all political parties which have ruled in Sindh over the past decades have themselves indulged in occupying forest land or getting it allotted with no merit and only on the basis of influence.

In fact one of the few remaining forests of Sindh are the areas where the army has installations and therefore the political heavy weights were unable to occupy those lands.Recommend

If anything, PA is the one MOST deserving of land. Their sacrifices are real and in defense of the thankless people backstabbing them instead of ultra corrupt people buying lands from money that doesn’t even belong to them or snatching them away from helpless villagers. If it was for me, army can take EVERYTHING. We owe them for letting this country live thus far because if not for them, our politicians would GLADLY sell the country whole to fill their banks abroad.Recommend
