KARACHI: Sindh chief minister Qaim Ali Shah has approved the release of Rs160 million to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) to provide 2,750 free-of-charge water tankers daily during the month of Ramazan. "Apart from this, you must take strict action against illegal hydrants otherwise I will take action against you," CM Qaim Ali Shah warned the water board's officials.

Shah issued these directives while presiding over a meeting at the CM House on Thursday. The KWSB's managing director briefed the meeting that the total water requirement of the city was 1,100 million gallons per day (MGD), against which 550 MGD was available in the system. The shortfall of 550 MGD will be met when the K-4 project will start functioning, he explained. "A small part of the shortfall will be covered next year when two schemes of 160 MGD will be completed," he said.

The MD said that the KWSB was making all efforts against illegal hydrants and water theft.
