Russia ready to sell four Mi-35M combat helicopters to Pakistan: report

Just last year, Russia lifted its embargo on the delivery of armaments and military hardware to Pakistan

MOSCOW: A source in the Russian system of military and technical cooperation revealed that a draft contract has been delivered from Russia to Pakistan for the dispatch of four Mil Mi-35M (NATO reporting name: Hind E) combat helicopters, according to a report published on TASS.

Russia's state arms exporter Rosoboronexport, said that talks pertaining to the delivery of helicopters were under way with the Pakistani side. However, declined to disclose the details of these consultations.

"Following the results of the talks held earlier on helicopters, which Pakistan would like to get from Russia, a draft contract on the delivery of four Mi-35M gunships has been sent to the Pakistani side. Pakistan is now studying the document," the source said.

Just last year, Russia’s Rostec hi-tech corporation CEO Sergey Chemezov announced that Russia had lifted its embargo on the delivery of armaments and military hardware to Pakistan and was holding negotiations on the delivery of helicopters to the country.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry later announced that the sides were negotiating the delivery of a batch of Mi-35 helicopters. Pakistan currently has several Mi-17 helicopters transferred by the United States as assistance in the fight against militants.

The Mi-35M is a profoundly modernised version of the Mi-24 (Hind) attack helicopter with new avionics and onboard equipment, a different tail rotor and a more powerful engine.

This machine is an updated version of it old version Mi-24. Pakistan never spend a penny on an item which does not work in easterly heading." @Asad Khan: Absolutely right. Its battle tested unique machine. Old version of these machines killed over one million Afghans during eighties. Hope new version in our hands will surpass that number.

Pakistan should say thanks but no thanks. Because of sanctions the Russians are desperate for any money they can receive. We don’t need these gadgets. Ask them to show us how the technology works instead. I am sure these wont work against our real rival on the East.

Mr. Banker do not poke your nose where it does not belong. You are a banker not a Security Expert or an International Relations Expert. USSR had alll the arms. Its the money ! and we all know how much money Pak has, BTW when is the new loans coming from IMF?

We are buying because we need them as we have been receiving threats all the time. We should be prepared all the time and our Army know it very well as to what is in the best interest of a country. You better look at your poverty stricken country where the hideouts of terrorists and their masters are based.

Kam | 9 years ago | Reply Pakistan have different helicopters for combat role and troop carriers. This is two in one helicopter. It can carry troops to target and can also give close air combat support. So destroy a terrorist hide out and then send commandos to finish what remains and then bring them home all becomes easy.

Osd | 9 years ago | Reply This seems like a very good deal. Mi-35 shares a lot of components with the Mi-17 so it will be easy to maintain. At the same time, it will beef up the army in terms of coin operations. Another plus point is that this deal will put pressure on usa to rebuild its military relationship with Pakistan. So it is all in all a wonderful move by Pakistan and it is even more so when we analyse India continous blunders on every level.

Adnan Siddiqi | 9 years ago | Reply Being Russia's biggest trading partner, India can cajole Russia to cancel this deal. Russia is an even bigger unreliable weapons supplier than Uncle Sam. Best bet is to go for the Chinese and Turkish platforms. Lots of potential there including JV and technology transfer.
