MINGORA: The construction of Bagh Dheri Irrigation Channel in Matta tehsil, Swat will help make barren lands arable enough to cater to the food requirements of a growing population.

This was said by Minister for Irrigation Mehmood Khan on Sunday at the inauguration ceremony of the project in Swat. Khan was the chief guest on the occasion.

With the construction of the water channel, small power houses will also be constructed so that electricity issues can also be solved, he said. The canal will provide clean drinking water to over 0.1 million people in the district.

The Superintendent Engineer of Swat Irrigation Circle, Shafeequr Rehman, was also present on the occasion. He briefed the guests about the project, saying it will be built at a cost of Rs850 million and the canal will be about 23 kilometres long.

Water from the canal is expected to irrigate a barren area of around 7,000 acres in PK-84, Swat-V constituency, in Matta.

The minister appealed to the public to cooperate with the government during the construction of the canal.
