10 injured as students lob hand grenade, exchange fire with guards at Hazara University

At least four in critical condition; clash erupted after students were stopped for security search at main gate

MANSEHRA: Close to a dozen people were injured on Thursday when groups of students and locals used hand grenades in a clash with security guards at Hazara University's main campus in Mansehra.

Students travelling in a Suzuki van reportedly started a fight with guards when they were asked to be searched for security purposes at the main gate of the campus.

According to sources, at least 10 of the injured students and guards have been shifted to the King Abdullah Teaching Hospital, of which four are in critical condition.

Sources at the university and police said security was tightened around the university earlier this morning after they received threats.

The fight is said to erupted when one of the students who arrived in the Suzuki van started misbehaving with the guard. Local shopkeepers came to the defence of the guard, while the situation aggravated further when other groups of students joined in.

Eyewitnesses revealed that both sides opened fire, after which a hand grenade was hurled by a student leaving at least a dozen injured.

Administration offices, laboratories and classrooms were ransacked and damaged. A teacher at the university confirmed that teachers and female students were safe but tensions continued among the groups.

The teacher, who requested anonymity, blamed the police on the grounds that they had been informed but only a dozen police personnel were sent, which did not prove to be sufficient to control the situation.

Student of Hazara University | 9 years ago | Reply Dear All, hand gurnad was used by a local person on student. why the local people interpear in the university activities. you must think about this. if any student voilating the ruls, the admin must expel them from the university permanently. no one will do these kind of activities.

Zafar | 9 years ago | Reply These students should be expelled for sure (no reconciliation of any sort is required, as such things happen usually in such incidents). They should not be allowed admission in any other university in Pakistan. and thirdly they should be tried in anti terrorist courts.

abc | 9 years ago | Reply student was pedestrian as he have no need of vehicle because he have hostel just across the road in front of uni gate and the attacker were not shopkeepers they were called by the guard for fight and were local people and were about 100 in number out them about 10-12 were carrying automatic weapons not seen before by me, and this guard is the same person who injured a student by opening fire last year in funfair at that time he was just a gardener and after that university administration made him guard and grenade was thrown by them not from student side as we were fully bare handed so please make your info correct

Kokab | 9 years ago | Reply Pakistanis carry guns the way Londoners carry umbrellas. Students and teachers are allowed to carry illegal firearms in the universities and Colleges. There is no check, no control, no rule, no law, nothing. Thats why things like these happen all the time.
