Train service: Commodities to be exported to Iran

Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique has said that the launch of the cargo train service between Pakistan and Iran is aimed at promoting trade between the two countries.

Pakistan is also interested in launching a train service to Turkey via Iran.

“We have also started renovation work and restoration of the track between Quetta and Zahidan for the freight train service,” Rafique said.

Referring to the objectives of the cargo train, he said Pakistan wanted to increase trade with Iran. “We will export rice and other commodities through our Quetta-Taftan and Zahidan train service.” Earlier, these goods were sent to Iran by road.

Rafique added the train service would carry 24 bogies, which would eventually be increased to 40. “We will purchase 2,000 litres of diesel at a price of Rs15 per litre for the train service.”

He pointed out that despite facing problems in launching an ‘eco’ train service, the government was pressing ahead with the plan.
