Pakistan’s Mother Teresa

Letter June 08, 2015
His services to the poor extend beyond Pakistan, yet, the media of this country has no time to highlight his services

LAHORE: Human beings like Abdul Sattar Edhi are a blessing par excellence for Pakistan, a country plagued with corruption, crime, barbarity, ethnic and religious fanaticism, hate speech and government machinery immune to the suffering of its citizens.

Edhi lives in the real world, runs the biggest fleet of private ambulances, including some built on helicopters, to provide relief to the poorest of the poor, orphans and those suffering from man-made and natural disasters. He does not use his vehicles to provide a free air travel facility to the country’s corrupt political and bureaucratic elite. He refrains from self-promotion through paid advertisements and refuses to offer free Umrah junkets to powerful pressure groups, occupying himself more with serving humanity. His services to the poor extend beyond Pakistan, yet, the electronic media of this country has no time to highlight his services because he refuses to oblige, unlike the most controversial real estate bigwigs, who favour powerful pressure groups within the state bureaucracy and media.
