QUETTA: A torrent washed away two villages in Balochistan’s Khuzdar district, leaving at least 14 people dead and another six missing on Thursday.

Confirming the death toll, Khuzdar Deputy Commissioner Abdul Waheed Shah said heavy rainfall in the mountainous region near Shah Noorani resulted in flash flooding.

The hill torrent hit the villages, sweeping away at least 20 people. While the bodies of 14 people have been retrieved, the remaining six people are still missing.

Shah said a rescue team along with the  Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) members had started relief operations.

Shabbir Ahmed, a Balochistan Levies official in Khuzdar, said dozens of houses were washed away by the flash flood, which hit the villages Kohen Mandru and Golu Goth in the Sarona tehsil. The torrent developed following rainfall in the mountainous region of Mastung with the rainwater gushing down towards Hub Dam.

Khalifa Mohammad Hashim, a resident of Shah Noorani, complained about lack of relief efforts in the area after the flood. “People have started rescuing on their own and food and relief items are being distributed among the victims,” he said. Road link between Khuzdar to Shah Noorani has also been cut off.

Balochistan Chief Minister Dr Abdul Malik Baloch expressed condolence with the family members of the flooding victims and ordered the deputy commissioner to ensure maximum relief for the displaced people.

PDMA officials have provided 200 tents and food to the victims while a control room has been set up with the chief minister monitoring the operations. Frontier Corps (FC) personnel also arrived in the flood-affected area to take part in rescue and relief mission.
