The move comes less than 24 hours after a case was registered against him at the Azizabad police station early on Thursday morning for harbouring criminals and providing them protection.
On Thursday evening, Rangers handed over custody of Amir to the Gulberg police.
Investigation officer Gulberg police station Mobin Zaidi, while talking to The Express Tribune, confirmed that they now had custody of the MQM leader for further investigation.

Rangers had apprehended nearly half a dozen target killers during a raid at MQM headquarters – including Faisal Mehmood, aka Mota, who was condemned to death by a court over his involvement in the murder of television journalist Wali Khan Babar.
According to the Protection of Pakistan Ordinance, Rangers are allowed to detain suspects for a period of 90 days. Khan, who had been detained on March 11, would have completed his three month detention period on June 11.
