The director-general of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Rawalpindi Zahir Shah said corruption leads to injustice, lawlessness and creates a sense of hopelessness while speaking at seminar at the National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences (Fast-NU).
Shah said NAB was committed to eradicating corruption and corrupt practices across the country by using all its resources, said a press release issued on Saturday.
The menace of corruption and poverty were closely interlinked, a surge in one has a direct bearing on the other, Shah added. He said NAB was established to eradicate corruption in a holistic and integrated manner.
The bureau has recovered over Rs4.5 billion of looted public money in 2014, bringing the overall total recovery to date to Rs262.008 billion, he shared.
He informed that the Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development and Transparency in its latest report had rated NAB’s performance at 42 per cent based on a public survey. This compares quite favourably to 29 per cent public confidence in police and 26 per cent in the working of the government offices, Shah added. He said the rate of success of the NAB’s prosecution work in all courts was 70 per cent.
