Though classically trained but the singer has excelled in different genres and is now looking forward to teaching classical music. “I want to teach classical music to the new generation but due to the lack of government support it seems difficult. I can’t go door -to-door to teach music in this age,” Suraiya told The Express Tribune.
She believes that teaching music has become more of a business these days. Singing is an asset that should be transferred to generations with full devotion. “The government should set up places such as alHamra around the country,” she suggested. Having a dynamic musical background, Suraiya doesn’t look for any new opportunities as she believes she has performed enough in her life. “I started my career from Radio Lahore when I was 15. I was named Suraiya Multanikar by the great Ustad Bandu Khan in my childhood.”
She got inspiration from the works of Roshan Aara Begum, Ustad Salamat Ali Khan, Ustad Amanat Ali Khan, Fateh Ali Khan and Mehdi Hassan and learnt a lot from them. I was also enthusiastic to sing for films,” she added. As Suraiya seeks to pass on her talent to others, her daughter, Rahat Multanikar has acquired her vocal prowess among her children. She too is planning to launch her album soon. Suraiya is grateful to the Pakistani music enthusiasts for giving her so much respect. “Music is in my soul and I’ll continue it,” she said.
