Musharraf spoiled my govt’s good work: Sharif

Nawaz Sharif says Pakistan would have been one of the Asian Tigers had his government not been been toppled.

LAHORE: Former prime minister and PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif has claimed that Pakistan would have been one of the Asian Tigers, had his government not been toppled by General Pervez Musharaf.

“My government was busy in building an infrastructure and roads and other important mega projects with the help of good governance,” he said, adding that the motorway was laid, yellow cabs scheme started to overcome unemployment and coastal highway was under-construction.

In an interview with a US television MHz Networks at his Raiwind residence, he said his government had been working through different channels to establish good relations with India but, Musharraf destroyed all his efforts by triggering the Kargil conflict. APP

Ali | 13 years ago | Reply To be fair to Sharif & company the country was heavily sanctioned during his tenure. Musharraf's reign benefitted disproportionately from US aid and remittances from abroad. But this this does not alter the fact that Nawaz's policies were stupid and his current claims just serve to illustrate how flawed this man's thinking is. The Asian tigers are reaping the benefit's of investing in human capital, namely educating their workforce to compete with the west. Countries like Malaysia, South Korea etc all invested vast amounts in education. What did Nawaz do? Flood the country with cabs. Musharraf was slightly better but did not do enough. Our incumbent "president" is as bad as Nawaz. He makes no mention of improving the educational & health standards. Infact these budgets have been slashed. The army doesn't want to take power, but when the country is being so badly managed they can't just stand by and nothing.

Ali | 13 years ago | Reply The yellow cab scheme must havwe been one of the greatest plunders of foreign exchange in Pakistan's history. At the end of both of his tenureas the coffers were empty. Despite being one of the largest industrialists in the country his conglomerates payed not an iota in tax. The money wasted by his yellow cab scheme only brought him the support of cronies. How many new schools were built? Did literacy level improve during his tenure? How about health indices, did they rise? Law and order, that was definitely a failure. Commenting on that cost the last COAS Karamat his job. How about Pakistan's exports? Did debt levels rise or fall?These motorways he boasts of, where did the funding come from? More IMF lons no doubt? How much did they add to the economy? Answers on a postcard!

Yasser | 13 years ago | Reply @Misk Little knowledge is dangerous, bridges collapse everywhere, Just google about UK, KSA, US etc though Musharraf regime wasn't comprise of angels either, but that was one in million example, yes one collapsed but millions constructed and still not collapsed alhamdulillah :) Now i don't need to tell you how Qarz Utaro Mulk Sanwaro scheme collapsed so as robbery on bank accounts during Mr. Sharif regime.

Adi | 13 years ago | Reply @yasser....when there is so much constructions constrcutions are boaund to happen...the same day shershah birdge collapsed the bridge also collapsed in Hyderabad India...so would you blame it on Manmohan sinngh. Pls acknowledge, Nawaz may have a plan...even the mozambique governemtn has a plan..but did he have the cash for it? who was willing to trust pakistan after the debacle of foriegn exchange freezing

Ahmer Ali | 13 years ago | Reply Assalam-o-Allaikum Warahmatullah.Drama of doing and completing more and more developing projects than the previous government has been played from a long time and every previous government claimed and present government claims that they have done marvelous works in their regimes than the previous regime but they are not given the complete tenure.The nation has been fooled and deceived on the name of this drama on large scale by the every government even some leaders claim that they have done a lot which have been never done since 1947.This Nawaz Sharif's statement is not new.We are used to it.So don't be surprise on this statement of a hypocrite leader.Every leader think about himself in this way and considers the previous leaders corrupt and wrong.

Yasser | 13 years ago | Reply A bridge construction near Liaquatabad in Karachi started in BB era in 89 and that construction completed in 2000 during Musharraf regime, We all know that how much Infrastructure Musharraf regime helped in developing. Telling lies won't help you Mr. Sharif, better come up with fool proof lies next time. Thank You :)
