PESHAWAR: The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government is yet to finalise the rules of business for the local government set-up which takes charge in June across the province.

The provincial local government department has drafted separate rules of business for the local government system at the district, tehsil, village and neighbourhood levels. These rules were open for suggestions and opinions from the public for a ten-day period as per legal requirements. The rules have been uploaded to the local government department’s website and readers have been asked for suggestions.

According to officials of the department, the deadline for public suggestions was Monday and only three or four of them came through, showing a lack of interest.  The department secretary Jamil Ahmad confirmed the underwhelming public response and said those suggestions sent in had been taken into consideration. He added the law department had vetted the rules.

“The rules will be opened again for public suggestions for another seven days and then finalised,” said Ahmad. He added the chief minister and chief secretary would approve and sign them for implementation.

The secretary said the process may take 10 more days, while polling day is around the corner. The rules of business are made for the operation and organisation of the councils which would come into being as a result of the elections.

The rules have defined powers and functions of the councils at the village, tehsil and district levels.
