According to reports, people on the wagon were returning from a ceremony at a nearby Hindu holy town near the Ganges River, Lal added.
Six out of the 33 people injured in the accident were in critical condition and were taken to a hospital in the nearest big city of Meerut.
With one of the largest train networks serving around 23 million passengers daily, railway accidents in India are quite common. And lack of money means that hundreds of dangerous crossings in the country are not guarded around the clock.
