Speakers at a remembrance reference demanded that the government establish an academy which should be named after former group editor of Daily Express Syed Abbas Athar, commonly referred to as Shah ji.
The reference, organised by National Press Club (NPC) on Friday brought together politicians and journalists together who insisted his columns held lessons for young journalists.
Speaking on the occasion, Federal Minister for Information Senator Pervez Rashid said that Shah Ji was a man of strong commitments and practically proved them during all dictatorship regimes during which he was jailed, unemployed and faced other hardships like banishment.
Special Assistant to Prime Minister on National Affairs Irfan Siddiqui said that Shah ji played a significant role in making headlines of Urdu newspapers with an art and ingenious way by using his creativity.
Former Information Minister Dr Firdous Awan proposed that an academy should be named after Syed Abbas Athar, and National Press Club should lay its foundations. She said that Shah ji’s columns leave behind a lesson for young journalists to learn from..
NPC President Sharyar Khan, while offering honorary membership of NPC to Fauzia Abbas, the deceased’s daughter, said academiesshould be named after such people and they should be honoured with awards.
