QUETTA:

A man was killed and five others, including two policemen, sustained bullet injuries in what appeared to be a targeted sectarian killing in the provincial capital city of Balochistan on Tuesday.

SHO Jumma Khan said Hazara community members were busy in maintenance of a rickshaw at a workshop on Kasi Road when unknown armed men, wearing masks on their faces, opened fire on them. As a result a man was killed and five others were injured.

“Two of the police personnel were passers-by when they came under attack,” the SHO said, adding that others were sitting at the workshop. The attackers managed to escape unchallenged.

The deceased was identified as Ali Raza and the injured as Abbas Awan, Sadiq Ali, Essa Mohammad, Ashraf and Safar.

Soon after the incident angry protesters of the Hazara community took to the streets and staged a protest demonstration at Meezan Chowk and condemned the ruthless killing.

The enraged protesters also set on fire tyres at Meezan Chowk and chanted slogans against the government and law enforcement agencies while demanding immediate arrest of the culprits. All the shops were closed forcefully by the demonstrators in Liaqut Bazaar, Meezan Chowk, Mission Road and Alamdar Road.

The protesters also fired shots in the air which left two people injured, who were later shifted to the Civil Hospital Quetta.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack till the report was filed.
