India raises objections over China-Pakistan Economic Corridor

Chinese envoy in Delhi summoned and objection over the project was lodged

DELHI: Days before the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits China on a three-day state visit, India formally registered a protest against the recently signed $46 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

According to reports in the Indian media, the Chinese envoy in Delhi was summoned to the Ministry of External Affairs and an objection was lodged over the project.

The $46 billion dollar investment intends to create infrastructure network which will see a land route linking China’s west to the Arabian Sea through Kashmir.

India has also expressed its concerns about China routing its corridor through Kashmir, but President Xi Jingping had dismissed these objections, describing the economic corridor as "a commercial project."

Last month, India’s high commissioner to Pakistan had said that his country was not threatened by the $46-billion economic corridor between Pakistan and China, as an economically-strong Pakistan would bring regional stability.

Dude you got to know that progress of a state or even a person depends on its potential abilities. Pakistan is strategically and geographical has immense importance. China, landlocked central Asian countries, Afghanistan, Russia, Iran and India too can get benefits from the route. And CPEC isn't just the road and rail link but energy projects are also part of it. Once Pakistan has enough electricity to run industries the textile and other industries will realize a boom. World knows how fertile our land is once proper irrigation plan we get through CPEC which has few hydral projects too well it will certainly help to increase our agri export. We are rich of natural resources like coal, gold, copper and minerals once finance is in hand we can extract these and utilize to produce finished goods rather to export the raw to other countries. So in my opinion yes it can be a game changer if this project isn't politicized and destroyed. Further, regarding development in disputed territory if india can built baglihar dam and least allow us to build some roads.

He's healthy, and young and quite fit. He's just plain lazy and stupid. Just by begging he earns between 100-200 rupees a day. Once in a blue moon, once in 2-3 years, one day he earns 600-1000. And that day he believes that his life has changed. He's a rich man now and he need not worry for the rest of his life. And he enjoys that for a week. A week later, he's back on the street. You get the moral of the story.

JSM | 9 years ago | Reply @Samir: We are not a subservient nation. The protest is just a formality. Pakistan is not China nor can you become like China by associating with them. During 60 years of close associations with Americans you could not become like them or benefit as a nation from the association. Knowing Pakistan, there is nothing for Indians to worry about CPEC- Nothing will never get built.

If you still think Indus river is yours, wait for few more years, our dams will be complete . then you will have indus drain flowing through Pakistan.

Farooq Qazi | 9 years ago | Reply I am surprised at the comments coming in from Indians. Specially shocked at what some of our Sikh friends are saying. Forgetting what India did to them and that their forefathers gave their lives for a Sikh Punjab in the form of Khalistan. Slaughtered at the Golden Temple. They forget somehow what many Sikhs don't. India has been doing to Kashmiris the same that they have been doing to Sikhs. Kashmir should be resolved. Yes. But not by force but by mutual consent of Pakistan and India on the concerns of the Kashmiris. And it should be addressed for the Kashmiris. The objection raised on the Chinese investment concerns India because of Baluchistan as well. Where the Indians have been instigating a covert war on Pakistan's interests. However, their concern and objection cannot be materialized and addressed as per their will and desire. They are still to come to norms with China. Only a short while back, Chinese military was roaming around in Leh or Ladakh area (cant exactly recall which one) and the Indian media was highlighting that quite a lot. I understand how much the Indian media hypes up things and exaggerates situations but that episode is still to be probed and facts brought forward in order to access how much can India resist the Chinese giant leaning over her. Keeping aside the fact that Chinese have no interest in gaining land from India and they're least bothered on that front. I wonder what strategic difference would it make if China built a corridor through the Himalayas into Indian Punjab and all the way down to Mumbai, an already flourishing and huge port in the warm waters, and goes through relatively peaceful areas. But it does not. Why chose a struggling and troubled Pakistan and a huge investment in Baluchistan? Seems like Pakistan and China are more on the same page and India feels left out in such times. India need to resolve its issues with China as well as Pakistan. Because all of us will and our future generations would still be living here a 100 years from now.. We should all think of what they get in their inheritance. Hate or Peace.

Since, the proposed corridor goes through this disputed region, in order to be consistent with its official stand the protest has been made, even though the govt does not oppose the corridor it self. It has more to do with maintaining a particular legal stand than actual opposition.

If Kashmir is disputed, then the whole of it is disputed. UN mandated rules are applicable to the whole of Kashmir, the part that is with India, and the part that Pakistan invaded in 1947.

How can Pakistan make such major changes in what it considers disputed territories. Of course Pakistan has the right to do what it wants in its sovereign pert, but not in the "disputed" territories.

Since Plebiscite could not be conducted in 1948 because of Paki occupation, the condition stood waived and the entire Kashmir became part of India in 1956 as per accession.
