MACHH / KARACHI: Authorities in Mach Jail hanged convicted target killer Saulat Mirza early Tuesday morning.

The body later arrived in Karachi through PK 363.

Emotional scenes were witnessed at the cargo terminal of the Jinnah International Airport where Saulat’s body arrived.

His weeping sisters showered rose petals on the body.

“No one was able to save him” one of them said.

The body was taken to Edhi Morgue for final rites and then later to his home. According to reports, funeral prayers will be held at Maghrib and he will be buried next to his mother at Mohammad Shah graveyard.

Saulat’s wife is with the body in the ambulance outside their home in Gulshan-e-Mehmar.

While talking to The Express Tribune, Saulat’s wife asked why the government had given them false hope when they had no intention of saving him.

“Why did they stop the execution earlier if they weren’t going to save him,” she said.

“Why did they give us hope? It seems that deals have won and workers have lost,” she added.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Saulat’s sister said that one of her brother’s last wishes was that his body not be photographed or filmed by the media.

Despite his family’s requests to keep the media away, some news channels managed to get footage of the convict’s body.

The hanging came a day after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif made the final decision on the execution.

Mirza, who was convicted of killing Karachi Electric Supply Company’s managing director Shahid Hamid, his guard and driver, in Karachi, had his execution deferred twice before.

Prior to the execution, he was inspected by a doctor and given a clean bill of health. He was then led to the gallows and was hanged under the supervision of a magistrate.

An ambulance was present at the jail to transfer his body to Karachi for burial.

Meanwhile, Mirza was buried at the Shah Mohammad Shah graveyard in North Karachi.

Earlier, his relatives, including his brothers and sisters, met with the death row prisoner.

The execution was stayed on March 19 after he made startling revelations about Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain’s alleged involvement in the murder of KESC’s managing director.

On March 30, Mirza’s execution was stayed for a further 30 days.

The Sindh High Court on May 8 rejected a plea seeking delay in death row prisoner Mirza’s execution.

“There is no cogent reason for re-investing the 18-year-old murder of then managing director of the Karachi Electric Supply Company, Shahid Hamid, for which notorious target killer Saulat Mirza is scheduled to be hanged on May 12.”

His death warrants had been re-issued by an anti-terror court on May 2.

Mirza hanging solves nothing , he would have no personal animosity with the victims. The was a huge class differences between them both so any business of family conflict is ruled out. This was a plain case of killing by order. People who were named in the complicity should have been investigated. Baba Ghuri does enjoy a Clean reputation in terms of corruption and Mr Altaf role in Karachi law and order matters have always been conspicuous.
The bureaucrats and the establishment had no guts to investigate the real perpetuates would have the power of turning the mega city upside down. This is most unfortunate. At least Saluat Mirza met his deserving end.Recommend

First of all May Allah forgive him and rest his soul in peace because he is no longer with us. Secondly, He was a criminal and a killer so he has got finally what he deserved. Apart from that there are many other Saulat Mirza (SM) part of militant wing of different parties like PPP and PML on the top.

More than 7 people of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) died in Lahore

Similarly, Ozair baloch who was running a militant group in Lyari (Karachi) under shelter of PPP has not brought to Pakistan for further prosecution. I don’t know why, when the link below clearly says the he has been arrested by Interpol.

The treatment must continue for the better future of Pakistan but without any discrimination whether MQM, PML, PPP, ANP, Bureaucrat, Armed Force Personal(Esp. Gen. Kyani) or any Public or Private sector personnals.Recommend

@SK: You are dead right. Mirza had no personal enmity with Shahid Hamid, they both may not have even known each other. Family of KESC MD did not get any justice as yet – and they may possibly never get. Unless the real culprits behind this murder are nabbed and hanged, real justice will never be served. Babar Ghori ran away as soon as Mirza made revelations, and I am sure he will soon be returning to Pakistan as the witness and evidence is buried against this ethnic party – with the burial of Saulat Mirza.

I too wish this case was reopened during SM’s life and even commuting capital sentence to life imprisonment would have served better purpose. That way his handlers would have tough job to defend themselves given that this murder case has attracted an immense public interest.

I too wondered why the Ghauri chap suddenly fled overseas when his name was being revealed. And yes he could now return and wait for his party to share power again for him to become minister one more time and continue his plundering.Recommend

Is it really fair that a man be punished twice for his mistake/sin/errors? He was sentenced 17 years ago and hanged now, he spent 17 years in jail which is near a life sentence. If one is given a death penalty there should be an expedited process to get it over with, or let the person out on strict bail conditions. I am so naïve, right?Recommend

Again! Salute to our speedy justice system, 17 years to convict someone. Change is not easy, and the ruler we submit to aren’t what they appear to be. Politics is just a game of power and money, good people won’t come and the greedy & corrupt will keep sucking blood.

We have only one disease that’s corruption. I wish we find a sustainable cure for it across board.

Bad governance creates a gap, which gradually turns to disbelief, hopelessness and ends up with people like him
