A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) and Critical Green (Pvt) Limited for technical cooperation and promotion of scientific development and deployment of bioremediation through hybrid constructed wetlands as an effective and socially acceptable solution to waste-water treatment, said a press release.
The MoU was signed by QAU Vice-Chancellor Dr Javed Ashraf and Critical Green Director Mohammed Aqeel Saleem. The Critical Green is a technology developer and implementer for construction of hybrid-constructed wetlands.
Department of Micro Biology Prof Dr Safia Ahmed while briefing participants regarding the quality and capacity of research at QAU in the water and sanitation area said a small-scale sewerage treatment and wastewater reuse system has already been established at the university.
Under the project, a large scale wetland has been constructed to treat water of the university’s residential colonies and the treated water was now being used to irrigate plants.
She said that under the MoU, the Bioremediation Unit developed at D-Type Staff Colony would be declared as ‘Research and Development Facility for Bioremediation’, where new approaches would be tested for treatment of waste-water.
“The cooperation would help establish industry-academia linkages and engage young faculty members and scholars to develop efficient methods for the treatment of sewage and reuse of wastewater and bio-solids,” Dr Ahmed said.
