ISLAMABAD:

National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) will establish 540,000 literacy centers in 59 districts, with an aim to improve the overall literacy rate in the country by 10 per cent.

“This intervention will also achieve 85 per cent literacy rate by 2023,” NCHD Chairperson Razina Alam Khan said on Monday.

She was addressing a media briefing session on Monday at the NCHD head office at Shaheed-e-Millat Secretariat.

She said the commission was working to make its literacy programme more meaningful by linking it with skill development and income generation.

Khan said NCHD was committed to ensuring universal primary education. She said NCHD aimed to start adult literacy courses for 16-plus age groups and will link literacy with skill development.

“Our target is to improve literacy rate to 75 per cent
by 2018 from the current 60 per cent through National Youth Literacy Movement,” she said.
