Australian FM’s visit: No mercy for militants, says Nawaz

PM counts successes in military operations

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif vowed on Thursday to show no mercy to militants as he counted the successes of the ongoing military operation in the tribal areas.

“Those who kill innocent people do not deserve any mercy,” the premier said during a meeting with Australia’s Foreign Minister Julie Bishop at the conclusion of her two-day visit to Islamabad.

His remarks were seen as a clear message to the international community on his administration’s efforts to curb terrorism in the country.

Nawaz pointed out that his country’s economy had stagnated in the wake of terrorism. The premier, however, said that through a successful military offensive, the country has been able to dismantle the terrorists’ network and sanctuaries. He welcomed the support and cooperation of the Australian government including for the Temporarily Displaced Persons.

Speaking about his government’s reform agenda, the premier informed the Australian diplomat that most economic metrics are better since he came into office.

The Australian foreign minister appreciated the government’s reform agenda which has resulted in economic growth and increased job opportunities across the country.

She also invited the prime minister to visit Australia along with a business delegation for strengthening trade ties between the two countries.

Meeting with the Army chief

Later, Bishop called on Army chief General Raheel Sharif at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi. During the meeting, the Australian envoy praised Pakistan’s efforts to curb terrorism.

Separately, General John F Campbell, Commander Resolute Support United States Forces in Afghanistan also called on the Army chief at the GHQ on Thursday.
