KOHAT:

The Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) on Tuesday cut off power supply to Kohat municipality’s office and tube wells over non-payment of dues.

According to Wapda official Younis Shah, the tehsil municipal office’s unpaid bills amount to Rs7.8 million. He said several notices were issued in the past but the administration turned a blind eye to them. “We are aware of the consequences of disconnecting power supply but the decision has been taken out of compulsion,” he said. As the tube wells have stopped pumping life into Kohat’s water lines, a severe crisis of potable water is imminent.

When approached for comment, Kohat Chief Municipal Officer (CMO) Shoaib Khan said the department was paying the company back on an instalment basis yet the power supply was disconnected. Khan said the non-payment was caused by the department’s long-standing financial woes.
