Presidential nod: Reinstated employees given legal protection

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday accorded his assent by signing the “Sacked Employees (Reinstatement) Bill, 2010” into a law during a special ceremony held here at the Aiwan-e-Sadr.

The Sacked Employees (Reinstatement) Bill, 2010 was passed by the National Assembly and the Senate on October 7 and November 10, respectively. It became a law after the president formally gave his assent to it.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, the president congratulated all workers who were now reinstated to their jobs. He also felicitated the parliament for passing this law, the minister for labour and manpower and everyone else that was involved.

“The critics sometimes accuse us of not providing jobs to the people. Yes, the job market has shrunk due to the global economic recession. But I ask critics: isn’t the reinstatement of thousands of sacked employees equivalent to giving them jobs?” he remarked.

“The act signed today aims at providing relief to the politically victimised workers. It will benefit those appointed in a government department or in an autonomous body during the period from November 1, 1993 to November 30, 1996 and were dismissed during the period from the November 1, 1996, to October 12, 1999”.
