An anti-terrorism court (ATC) remanded eight policemen on Monday for their alleged involvement in kidnapping a civilian for ransom.
The suspects included police officer Faisal Jaffri, ASI Asif and six police constables — Jalal Haider, Imran, Ashfaq, Jahangir, Syed Shafat Ali and Kafil Noor. Jaffri, a proclaimed offender yet a serving law enforcer, was wanted in a dozen cases of extrajudicial killings, attempted murder, robberies and kidnapping. However, he remained beyond the reach of criminal justice despite being arrested earlier.
On Saturday, he was arrested in another kidnapping for ransom case. This time, however, by a special unit of the Pakistan Rangers, who later handed him over to the relevant police station.
The suspect, according to the prosecution, along with his accomplices had abducted a businessman, identified as Rao Inamullah. The suspects intercepted him near the Natha Khan Bridge on Sharae Faisal when he was going somewhere in his car. They took Inamullah along to an undisclosed place, while leaving his driver behind.
The ATC-I judge, Bashir Ahmed Khoso, remanded the suspects to police custody on physical remand for two weeks. The investigating officer was asked to submit a report on the next hearing which is scheduled for April 20.
