Opposition demands joint session of Parliament, APC on Yemen issue

Meeting expresses desire to resolve the present crises in Yemen through dialogue and negotiations

KARACHI: Opposition parties have demanded the government to convene a joint session of Parliament, as well as an All Parties Conference (APC) to decide Pakistan’s policy on the ongoing conflict in Yemen, and propose a way forward.

The demand came during a meeting on the Yemen issue and its implications for Pakistan, presided by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari at the Bilawal House on Wednesday.

“The participants expressed grave concerns over the situation in Middle East, and its effects on the region and Pakistan,” said PPP vice president Sherry Rehman, while reading the joint communiqué of the meeting.

Rehman said the participants expressed desire to resolve the present crises in Yemen through dialogue and negotiations.

The meeting expressed firm belief that the centrality of Saudi Arabia was pivotal for Muslims of the world and that Pakistan's response should reflect this belief.

The leaders also demanded that no individual should take any unilateral decision, without broad based discussion and consultation with all parties and stakeholders.

Muttahida Qaumi Movement leader Farooq Sattar also spoke on the occasion, and urged the incumbent government to take all parties into confidence before taking any decision.

Awami National Party chief Asfandyar Wali, Rashid Mahmood Soomro of the Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazl and Israrullah Zehri of the BNP (Awami), among other leaders also attended the meeting.

Dr. A.K.Tewari | 9 years ago | Reply The inclination of Pakistan toward US, UAE and China has been in relation to her unathorised claim regarding Kashmir and undue support to Paiestinians on the name of Ummat . Where as her good relation with India is a must for own survival. It is the seed she has sown in the past ,now started bearing fruits as a full grown tree . Now eat even if they are poisonous .

Dr. A. K. Tewari | 9 years ago | Reply It's not a religious issue and neither an issue of terrorism .It's purely an internal matter of Yaman which deserves to be solved by the people of Yaman . Any interference by Pakistan on the direction of US and KSA will prolong the war which can involve the other counteries as well and for such situation Pakistan will be held responsile .

Ashfaq11 | 9 years ago | Reply @Anarchist when Australia decided to send troops to Iraq most Australians were against it. The decision was made by then Prime Minister John Howard. No debate ever happened in Parliament. Just saying that it's not just Pakistan that these military deployment decisions are often made by executive rightly or wrongly. Personally I think Pakistan is not in a position to say NO to KSA.

Anarchist | 9 years ago | Reply Funny that parliamentarians have to demand a session on an important national issue, the decision on which was made days ago. Says a whole about importance/relevance of parliament in the country and how seriously everyone, especially the government, takes it.
