KARACHI: Defending champions India lost to Australia at the World Cup semi-final in Sydney on Thursday after an impressive campaign earlier in the tournament.

As M S Dhoni’s team walked off the field for the last time this tournament, some Pakistanis couldn’t help but rejoice. After all, a little friendly rivalry on the field doesn’t hurt.

Here are seven reasons you should not feel guilty about celebrating our neighbour’s crushing defeat:

1. This was ‘revenge’ for Pakistan’s first loss:

PHOTO: AFP

We had to sit through our team’s first loss in its first World Cup match at the hands of India. And honestly, their loss today makes up, if only slightly, for it.

2. This was also ‘revenge’ for all those years IPL deliberately ignored Pakistani players

PHOTO: IPL

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has seen a trend of not hiring Pakistani cricket players to play for their teams. India has gone on to hire players from various other countries and has always neglected our talented cricketers, on purpose. And given the immense talent of our players, that move was just uncalled for.

3. We will be spared from having to listen to biased Indian commentators

PHOTO: YOUTUBE SCREENGRAB

Lets face it, we are forced to listen to biased Indian commentators during the final almost every World Cup. Hopefully, this year, that won’t be the case.

4. The annoying ‘Mauka Mauka’ ad can finally stop now – for good

Brilliant as it may be, a series of ad campaigns initiated by Star Sports India, starring ‘Mr Mauka Mauka’, hit a nerve with all Pakistanis. Enough is enough. Good riddance.

5. This was ‘revenge’ — yet again — for the Indian Cricket Board shutting out the Pakistan Cricket Board in ICC’s revamping

PHOTO: ICC

What goes around comes around?

6. India made us look good today

PHOTO: TWITTER

During Pakistan’s quarter-final match with Australia, at one time it seemed as if we had a chance.  We fought back and created a moment that stunned the entire cricketing world — thanks to none other than Wahab Riaz. That seemed to be never the case in today’s one-sided, rather boring match

7. Finally, it’s India – and we have to prove our Hubbul Watni (patriotism)

PHOTO: AFP

At the end of the day, we are Pakistanis and since 1947, India has been our rival, and on the field, our sworn enemy. We will continue to troll them (in good faith) and prove our loyalty and patriotism to our beloved country.

While we recognise that India played a spectacular campaign, Australia came out as the better team in today’s decisive match.  So, even if just for today, let’s cheer!

Interestingly some Pakistani fans supported India in this semifinal.
In my family my mother supports Pakistan, whenever they play against any non Asian team; while my wife supports the opponent.

As far as I am concerned; I feel guilty supporting either party; and so end up pretending, I don’t care whether Pakistan wins or looses as long as they are not playing against India.

kind of complex feeling. I wonder if Pakistanis too feel the same way.Recommend

Australia made bhunah hoowa qeema out of India. And mashed potatoes out of over boiled potatoes. Dhoni went out on his last Pony. Virat tweeted to his girlfriend but got a nasty tweet from an Indian fan. The bookies will be out for Indian blood for a change. But one thing is for sure, the Indians will blame Pakistan for their loss and I wouldnt be surprised if we see a few border skirmishes very soon.Recommend

I don’t know why indians thought they had the ability to win as they were obliterated in the series prior to WC. Moreover, they just don’t have that flair to knockout the Aussies…

Pakistan on the other hand is an exceptionally talented team with fight & flair with plenty of excitement, Pakistan is managed poorly and our current home environment seeps into everything…..we suffer because of that. A day will come inshallah when Pakistan will rid itself of mulaiat/corrupt politicians etc & become the state our Qaid fought for and will rein supreme!Recommend

Sorry Buddy We loved it today.
But then the reason is Provocation by your own Media and Countrymen on Social Media.

Pakistanis didn’t care about Indian bashing in Tri-Series by Australia and England, leading to this world cup. But the Mauka Ads are naked provocation, all started by your own Media forgetting that you cannot win every world cup and sooner or later your Mauka will come and Pakistanis have a huge footprint on Social Media to revenge it :D – It is that sort of day today!Recommend

I watched Dil-e-Muztar on Youtube. These days it is being telecast in India as Dil-e-Nadan.

Never knew the people are so much alike, we speak similar language, live in similar houses, our cities look the same, yet I fail to understand why we hate other so much.

Perhaps if we made an effort, we may at least tolerate each other. And the stuff regarding Pakistani players being not allowed, don’t blame BCCI, blame politics. Who wouldn’t love to see Afridi in IPL?

And Oh, I’m hopelessly in love with Sanam Jung. We may have Katrina Kaif or Aishwarya Rai in India, but I’m bowled over by Sanam’s beauty and graceful style. If only I could marry her.

Cheers guys, don’t hate each other, there is enough hatred in this world without us contributing to make it worse.Recommend

Quite dellusional to let other teams take revenge. Honestly like all rivalries, i love watching Indians lose not because of 1947, but because of the sporting history. Similar to why i love Pakistan toppling over South Africans everytime (right from the Hanse Cronje days).
But regardless of the rivalry one cannot overlook the fact that Indians have really built their structure from the 92-93 days when they were in a steep decline (i cant even forget Prabarkar in his wee days). On the flipside, we have just collapsed, giving cricket to lobbyists and bowung down to the corridors of power. Though brilliant, we are always dependant on the flair and might of one or two individuals every tournament since 2002 (no disrespect to Wahab Riaz). High time for them to realize that Pakistan needs to invest in the sport and not their pockets else we will be battling against the Zimbabve’s and Ireland’s of the cricketing world for lower rung supremacy and being complacent with mediocrity.

    Be true to the sport!Recommend

write is perfect example of people who suffer from Cognitive dissonance.

It shows hatredness and negative thinking.
But why India should allow Pakistani players in IPL? What was the point of partition then? And who should pay for providing security to pakistani players? It upto them to decide whom to take or not.
Since when Pakistani channels start hiring Indian commentators?

4,7. I don’t think Mauka Mauka ad was made for Pakistani. This article support the ad.

When Indian Cricket Board shutted out the Pakistan Cricket Board in ICC’s revamping? It was PCB decision not be part of big four as stated by PCB chairman.
Agree with your point, that Wahab Riaz agression was the high point of that game.

IPL is a money making operation. Teams don’t Pakistani players because fans don’t like it. It is the price you pay for maintaining an unnecessary psychological enmity, which this article itself only serves to propagate.

If Pakistanis learn to limit the rivalry to the playing field and maintain friendly relations with India off the field, then Indian fans will welcome Pakistani players with open arms.

Its an answer to our Indian-biased so-called experts (like Shoaib Akhtar) that the team whom he always praised (india) and the team whom he always targeted with harsh, childish and ill-mentality comments (pakistan) have performed nearly equal in the Word Cup (India is just 1 step ahead losing of same team).Recommend

It doesn’t matter now who wins or loses against whom after we (Pakistanis) were out of the field in quarters.

It’s mostly not Indian public but their media and politicians who try hard and keep pumping hostility against Pakistan, all over the media and any forum where there are representatives of both nations. If both sides can get rid of their hate mongering politicians, we can get along very well. While there are many people in Pakistani media who openly appreciate Indian talent, unfortunately no such parallel exists in India. Ex president awarded prize to the winning Indianplayers with his own hands in good spirit when they defeated Pakistan in our home ground. I’m afraid such warmth was never expressed by any Indian leader ever after 47. We don’t launch biased or sarcastic campaigns on media. Things like these really irritate and then people will start enjoying your defeats as much as they enjoy their victories.Recommend

I agree some Indian spectators are shallow and too narcissistic when it comes to Pakistan but I know how much Indian media and spectators appreciated the good bowling of Wahab Riaz. I would lying if I felt good about India losing when I was watching India bat I felt they all seemed to be playing same game that Pakistan and SL played …their Star players didn’t compete and gifted the match to Aussies. There was no reason for India to let Australia score this high with the spin attack and then their top five just gave the wickets away…one team has to win but India didn’t even compete. I wanted one team from Sub continent to be in the final…India played as bad as Sri Lanka…just gave the match to Australia. I am not happy.
