Quit instead of expressing disgust, Congress tells VK Singh

Congress leader Manish Tewari says when duty becomes a burden, honourable thing to do is hand in your papers

NEW DELHI: Indian Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh was less than subtle about expressing "disgust" after representing his government at the Pakistan Day function at the Pakistani high commission yesterday.

A day after his statement, Congress leader Manish Tewari, however, told the former Indian army chief to quit instead of expression disgust, The Times of India reported.

Tewari added that in the past, ministers refused to attend Pakistani events.

“When duty becomes a burden, the honourable thing to do is to put in your papers,” Tewari later told a news agency, according to Zee News. “He is under no obligation to perform a duty which disgusts him.”

Singh, who was at the event for only a few minutes, appeared uncomfortable while sitting next to the Pakistan High Commissioner to India Abdul Basit.

A little while after attending the event, Singh tweeted with the hashtag ‘Disgust’, hinting that he might have been unhappy at being deputed to it.
