A Mexican wrestler died on Saturday during a fight after suffering a severe blow to the head by his opponent in the ring.

Pedro Aguayo Ramirez, better known as Hijo del Perro Aguayo, was knocked unconscious after he received a drop kick from one of his opponents, former WWE super star Óscar Gutiérrez, better known as Rey Mysterio Jr.

A video of the match shows that after receiving a hit from Rey, Aguayo fell on the ropes at the second-rope level. Not realising that Aguayo was unconscious, Rey went on to hit him with his signature move ‘Six one nine’. Even after receiving the hit, Aguayo’s body remains motionless and eventually slumped down to the bottom rope.

The other participants continued with the match for while before the referee and Aguayo’s opponents realised he was unconscious and seriously injured. He was removed from the ring on a stretcher taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The state prosecutor's office said it has opened an investigation into possible manslaughter.

The 35-year-old wrestler was the son of former Mexican wrestling legend Pedro "Perro" Aguayo  and had been showcasing his abilities in ring for almost two decades.
