Cricket extraordinaire Brian Lara said on Sunday that ICC’s decision to fine fast bowler Wahab Riaz following Pakistan’s defeat to Australia on Friday was “uncalled for”, while offering to pay for it himself.

Pakistan’s clash with Australia at the World Cup quarter-final was significant for more than one aspect but it was Riaz’s 30 minute spell with Shane Watson that was the highlight of the match.

“I don’t know what the ICC is thinking. It’s just uncalled for. We need this in a sport that people are running away from, especially 50-over cricket. I loved the exchange,” the former West Indies batsman said.

The bowling ace was fined half of his match fee for mocking the batsman and sending a ‘kiss’ in the air. Conversely, Watson was fined only a meager 15% of his match fee.

Wahab Riaz claps to mock Shane Watson, the former was fined 50 percent of match fee

Wahab was charged with using obscene language, while Watson was accused of conduct contrary to the spirit of the game when the two faced each other.

“The incident happened in the 33rd over of Australia’s innings when Watson ignored the umpires’ instructions and verbally engaged with Wahab, who, at the end of the over, followed through towards the batsman and used aggressive and abusive language,” said an International Cricket Council statement.

“It was above board as far as I’m concerned and I can’t wait to meet him. I want to meet with [this] Riaz guy. I’ll pay the fine,” Lara told NDTV.

“It’s ridiculous what the end result is. We are all entertainers. That to me was one of the highlights of the World Cup. A guy running in bowling at 150km/h plus and Watson looked like he was at school,” he added.

What a cool initiative by Lara.
Watson had started the rift earlier which led to this situation.
Ideally the fine should have been the equal. Recommend

At least Lara has the bone to say “its nuncalled for”. Not so our PCB. Where is it? Is it alive or dead? Stand up for you players or loose the right to represent Pakistan. Recommend

This is Brilliant step by Lara. If there are very less sizzling sixes, fours, catches or wickets situations like these make the game interesting as after all it is entertainment and a cricketer having style is much appreciated and respected at the same time.moreover the ICC should stop its bias attitude now that they know what a legend like Lara thinks about this thrilling spell of Wahab. I was really moved to see such comments from a player who has guts and courage to speak in such a way and supporting an upcoming fast bowler. In future what people will see of Riaz will the thing nobody has done in Cricket history. Brian Lara has done great by coming forward and commenting and encouraging young Wahab Riaz and once he meets Lara the real star will come out and it will be really an interesting turn around in Cricket. Three cheers for This great Brian Charles Lara.Recommend

You are a gentleman and a peerless batsman, Mr. Lara! Wahab’s bowling spell was indeed breathtaking and the fine is not only unjust it adds insult to injury when Shane Watson is slapped only 15% of the match fee. This is ridiculous in the extreme.Recommend

As it is the ICC seems to have killed the 50-over game by making it a longer version of the 20-20 game. The have completely loaded the game in favour of the batsmen. They need to take a serious relook at the rules as the scores are now beginning to look ridiculous.Recommend

I really enjoyed Wahab Riaz’s bowling that day. It was one of the most hostile spells seen in a long time. ICC is a kill-joy.Recommend

    @Sandip:
I agree, in modern day cricket, often the only job for bowlers is to get blasted all around the park for 4s and 6s. The scores of 300+ are common every second game, double centuries are being scored like fifties. Games are so not exciting anymore.Recommend

If and it is a big “IF”, India in the next 5-10 years evolves into a bowling side (don’t laugh, it could happen) and batting becomes weak, we will see 50 overs match with rules that will start favoring bowlers. Such is the pull of BCCI over ICC. Recommend

ICC has already screwed up cricket by making it a batsman’s game. This was a glimmer of hope and they are intent on ruining it.Recommend
