Turkish ‘Martyrs’ Day’ commemorated

A gathering was organised here at the Turkish Embassy on Wednesday to pay tribute to the martyrs of the naval battle at Canakkale in 1915, during the First World War, said a press release.


March 18 is commemorated as “Martyrs’ Day” in Turkey to commemorate all Turkish martyrs. Sacrifices of Muslims from the sub-continent who fought along side the Turks during the wars between 1911-1923 were also recognised on the occasion.

Turkish Ambassador Babur Girgin, in his introductory remarks highlighted the importance of the day and paid rich tribute to the Turkish and Pakistani martyrs who fought along side each other.

Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Chairman General Rashad Mahmood in his address at the ceremony underlined the importance that Pakistan attaches to Turkey.

Senator Mushahid Hussain, Air Marshal Rashid Kamal and Rear Admiral Fayyaz Gillani also attended the event.
