Army doing its best to train LEAs to fight terrorism: army chief

Pakistan has resolved to cleanse it from all kinds of terrorism, he adds

RAWALPINDI: Army chief General Raheel Sharif on Monday reaffirmed the military’s resolve in eliminating terrorism from the country.

According to DG ISPR Major-General Asim Bajwa, the chief of army staff (COAS) said that the Pakistan Army was doing its best to train all Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) in Pakistan to fight terrorists.

He was speaking at the newly established Counter Terrorism Training Centre at Pabbi Hills, as the first batch of 500 LEAs completed their training under the supervision of the army.

The batch included 200 police commandos, 200 men from Rangers, FC, Strategic Plans Division (SPD), Anti-Narcotics Force and 100 men from PAF and Pakistan Navy.

Senior military and police officers along with home secretaries of the four provinces were present at the occasion.

“While we train [our men] to fight terrorists, coordination and intelligence mechanisms is a must to preempt cooperation by masses in indicating suspects," remarked General Raheel.

“Let’s join hands, operation must continue fearlessly,” he added.

Hashmi | 9 years ago | Reply Pakistan army is indeed providing a very useful and much-needed service training the law enforcement personnel, which will greatly help them in achieving excellent results. Just as important is to make sure that these committed individuals who risk their lives to keep others safe are provided latest equipment, armament and protective gear to avoid unnecessary casualties and even fatalities. In a major terrorist attack in Lahore, commandos arriving to fight them were not all reported to have bullet proof jackets and helmets which seemed rather cruel as it increased their vulnerability considerably. And of course, coordination between various intelligence agencies is vital in order to ensure that the battle against terrorists is fought in an orderly and well-planned manner and achieves excellent results. The armed forces also did an excellent job in tribal areas where they have cleared large areas, killing terrorists by hundreds and making the rest flee. As a result of their sacrifices, displaced persons have already started moving back to their homes. However, the biggest hurdle to fighting militants and terrorists is the mindset, not so much of the terrorists from whom one does not expect any better but of our Punjab-based politicians who are at times reported to have made sort of peace-treaties with the large concentrations of terrorists there, on the understanding that they will not be chased so long as they left Punjab in peace. For such leaders, it is difficult, if not exactly impossible to make a U-turn now. They will not move unless the military exerts pressure on them to take up the battle against intolerance, militancy and terrorism in real earnest which has to be fought in cities, towns and villages of Pakistan for years. It will be interesting to see when and if the army chief will develop a will to pressure Sharif brothers to do the needful. People were shocked to see how easily the Punjab leaders wriggled out responsibility for Model Town carnage that left fourteen people dead and over eighty wounded through straight shooting by the Police on a peaceful gathering.
