WASHINGTON:

US President Barack Obama on Tuesday nominated veteran diplomat David Hale as the next US ambassador to Pakistan. He will succeed Richard Olson.

Presently America’s ambassador to Lebanon, Hale has served as the top US diplomat in Jordan and was also special envoy for Middle East peace under Obama.

The US has vowed to step up security and intelligence cooperation with Pakistan in a bid to combat militants, but relations between the two countries have often been strained.

Hale will have to be confirmed by lawmakers before assuming his responsibilities as the next US envoy to Pakistan.
