Protecting women

Letter March 08, 2015
Though Pakistan is a party to CEDAW, it is still a long way away from implementing measures listed

LAHORE: The International Women’s Day is being celebrated today and we shall see many seminars, conferences and related events being held countrywide that will talk about the protection, development and promotion of women rights. But the real question is, will these bring about any tangible change in the reality that women face in Pakistan? The answer to that is uncertain given that there is often a big gap between words and deeds as far as implementation of policies and laws is concerned.

We also need to see our women members of parliament rising to the occasion and propose fresh legislation that further seeks to expand the role women play in Pakistan’s economy and society. Though Pakistan is a party to CEDAW (Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination Against Women), it is still a long way away from implementing measures that bring it in full compliance with the Convention.
