Lake formed

A landslide caused by heavy rain has led to the formation of a lake which has damaged acres of standing crops and orchards in Reeshen, Chitral. The district administration has declared high alert in surrounding villages and hamlets.

An official of the administration said a huge landslide blocked the flow of Chitral River near Resheen, and within a few hours a lake measuring one and half kilometres in length had formed in the area. Around 20 acres of agricultural land was submerged in the lake water, destroying crops and tractors.  No human loss was reported.

According to Ali Sher Khan, a volunteer for Focus Humanitarian Assistance (FOCUS), an organisation working on relief efforts during natural disasters, the landslide occurred around 4am.

At the moment, water flow to the lake is slow. Assistant Commissioner Mastuj Minhajuddin visited the area and told residents to inform the district administration if the flow begins to increase.
