NEW DEHLI: India has cleared an $8billion plan to build seven warships as part of a twin push to ramp up local production and counter an increasing assertive China, a defence ministry official said on Thursday.

The move is seen as a way to narrow India’s huge gap with China’s advanced naval warfare systems while boosting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s push to manufacture defence equipment locally.

India, which is surrounded by hostile neighbours in Pakistan and China, is in the midst of a multi-billion-dollar upgrade of its ageing military hardware and recently lifted a cap on foreign investment in defence.

“The cabinet committee on security has cleared the proposal to build seven stealth frigates at domestic shipyards,” a source in the defence ministry told AFP of the meeting on Monday.

Four warships will be constructed at Mazagon Docks in Mumbai and the other three at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers in Kolkata.

The frigates will be equipped with stealth technology, making it harder to detect by enemy radars or other tracking systems.

The Times of India said the cabinet committee had also given the go-ahead for six nuclear-powered submarines as part of another $8 billion project when it met earlier this week.

Since his sweeping election victory in May, Modi’s right-wing government has cleared several proposals aimed at revamping and renewing the country’s Soviet-era military.

Modi has also worked to shore up regional alliances since he came to power in India, which has a longstanding territorial dispute with China over a remote Himalayan region.

China has also been accused of seeking to develop facilities around the Indian Ocean in a “string of pearls” strategy to counter India’s rise and secure its own economic interests.

The appearance of two Chinese submarines in Sri Lankan waters late last year sparked particular concern in New Delhi, which has traditionally regarded the island as being in its sphere of influence.

Have you ever wondered why you consider all your neighbors hostile.. or is it the other way around. My advice, don’t try to be the policeman of Asia..Didn’t worked out for Uncle Sam, certainly wouldn’t work out for you! Try to establish peace and mature yourselves rather than pointing fingers on any unfortunate event on ISI.Recommend

I hope sanity prevails and we don’t join this arms race. Our economy is much smaller and weaker and is on life support from aid money. We should focus on internal security and development.Recommend

@Raisani: it will create jobs. These industries will provide jobs. People are not fools to allow government to spend 8billion dollars just like that. The primary reason for this is security and creation if jobs. Democracy is alive and no prime minister is fool enough to spend money without any benefits to economy.Recommend

People tend to forget: China’s defense budget is 6 times that of India (even though as percentage terms of GDP it is same). India has a tense border dispute with China & Pakistan, and has no option but to be prepared to defend.

And $8billion is small change for a trillion dollar economy. Some poverty not withstanding.Recommend

My apologies for popping your bubble. India has extremely good relations with all its neighbours except Pakistan and China.

In contrast every neighbor of Pakistan seems to be bombing it on its border Recommend

Why do pakistanis always start worrying about poor Indians whenever they hear of India making some defence acquisitions, Atleast these platforms will be built in India, leading to technology upgradation and employment generation. Pakistan should stop comparing themselves to the third largest economy in the world if they do not wish to go down the USSR path.Recommend

    Afghanistan has problem with Pakistan
    India has problem with Pakistan
Even, China also has problem with Pakistan, Xinjiang is the best example

    @arun sharma:
Y do we start worrying about poor Indians, here I defuse your confusion.
Why we care is because, we believe in humanity, we believe in universal brotherhood and peace. So when we see Indian Sarkar`s craze for arm race, the face of poor n hungry Indians come in our mind. With these weaponry even the hitler couldn’t win. So I hope from now on you guys will start worrying about ur poor n hungry people too who dies on footpaths of Mumbai everyday because they have no shelter. Such cases never happen in our land of pure. We will keep worrying about those deprived people because their own government doesn’t.
