Accord with Chinese firm: Engro to develop coal plant in Thar

EPTL will enter into a coal supply agreement with SECMC for the purchase of 3.8 tons of coal per annum

ISLAMABAD: Engro Powergen Limited (EPL) signed a joint venture agreement with China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) for development of a coal-based power plant with two units of 330-megawatt each in Thar block-II. The joint venture company, Engro Powergen Thar Limited (EPTL) will enter into a coal supply agreement with Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) for the purchase of 3.8 tons of coal per annum which will be used for power generation. The agreement was signed by EPL CEO Shamsuddin A Shaikh and CMEC President Zhang Chun, said a statement issued here on Tuesday. Shaikh and Zhang briefed the Pakistan delegation on the progress being made on the project in coal mining and power production. Zhang said, “CMEC is a pioneer in developing power projects in Pakistan and we see Thar project to be the key to solving the future energy crisis in the country.”
