Sikh cab driver, mistaken for Muslim, attacked in California

A Sikh cab driver in Northern California was attacked after assailants mistook him for a Muslim.

Harbhajan Singh was attacked by two men, who shouted profanities and called him Osama Bin Laden. He escaped when a woman with the attackers intervened and put herself between them, reports Associated Press (AP).

Singh believes the men intended to kill him because he wears a turban.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has been approached by The Council on American-Islamic Relations to investigate if the attack was racially motivated.

subhan babu | 13 years ago | Reply When I visited Niagara Falls, on Canadian side, I came across a board near a restaurant that wrote 'we are sikhs and not hated muslims'. During our 6 day visit of USA and Canada, we always introduced as Indians. I do not know when will all this end and we can live anywhere with our own identity and honour. Subhan babu, Karachi

Remy | 13 years ago | Reply Utter ignorance and general osama-hysteria. Anyway, to reply to a comment, it's'true Islam has been given a bad name because of a very few people but as far as I'm concerned, it kept a very good name thanks to a very few of my friends. And I am a Christian European.

How ridiculous! If people don't care to learn then Sikhs should push education to defend themselves from such criminals. Punish the attackers for hate crime and give them a book about Sikhism and Islam. Intelligence is shown by actions clearly the attackers lack in all areas.

I recall seeing a sign in front of a sikh owned store in Philly, right after sept 11 attacks, which read "Peaceful Sikh from India not a Muslim, God Bless America". It was funny to the say the least.

As This has Become the new "norm" in Abroad now, and we cant just blame the abuser (although its definitely one individual who commited the crime in this case) the irony is our fellow true "muslim" brothers in faith have lead us to such nasty circumstances everywhere...everyone's got a negative idea attatched to muslims or anyone they "think" is, or looks like a Muslim. So Thanku terrorists, you have definitely spread the name of Islam the right way,now we're all doomed in one way or another.
