Jumping ship: Punjab’s ex-governor invited to join PTI
Chaudhry Sarwar was likely to be made the president of the party.
ISLAMABAD:
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Sunday invited Punjab’s former governor Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar to join the party’s struggle for ‘real democracy’ in Pakistan. The invitation was extended by PTI chief Imran Khan in a one-on-one meeting with Chaudhry Sarwar late Sunday evening, sources told The Express Tribune. Chaudhry Sarwar met the PTI chief at his Bani Gala residence and the meeting lasted for over an hour. Though Chaudhry Sarwar has yet not formally responded to the offer, sources said he has decided in principle to join the PTI. Sarwar stepped down as Punjab governor following differences with the leadership of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) saying, “I can serve Pakistan better out of office.” The PTI would also hold intra-party discussion over the possible inclusion of Chaudhry Sarwar and to give him some party office. Sources said Chaudhry Sarwar was likely to be made the president of the party. Previously, the office was held by Makhdoom Javed Hashmi who was expelled from the PTI for publicly levelling serious allegations against the party.
