“The government must also seek the return of the exiled leader of this mafia group, so that he can be tried for the death of the poor factory workers who fell victim to the MQM extortionist agenda and paid for it with their lives,” said PTI Information Secretary Shireen Mazari.
A report prepared by a joint investigation team (JIT) of the incident, submitted to the Sindh High Court (SHC) and Rangers, said the MQM was behind the deadly fire that claimed the lives of at least 258 factory workers.
“It is shocking, but not surprising, to see the findings of the JIT in the Baldia Town factory fire in which at least 258 workers died,” Mazari said in a statement.
The JIT report, along with a statement of the deputy assistant judge advocate general of Rangers, Major Ashfaque Ahmed, put the blame on Altaf Hussain's party.
The statement said the information had been disclosed by suspect Mohammad Rizwan Qureshi, an alleged worker of the MQM, on June 22, 2013, during a joint investigation.
According to the JIT report, the MQM worker revealed that a “well-known party high official” had demanded Rs200 million as bhatta (extortion), through his front man, from Ali Enterprises, the owners of the ill-fated factory, in August 2012.
MQM disowns Rizwan Qureshi
MQM’s Rabita Committee on Saturday responded to allegations levelled in a JIT report, stating that the party has no connection or affiliation with Rizwan Qureshi.
Rangers had in their report accused Qureshi.
“MQM has hundreds of thousands of workers. Anyone can pose as a worker. But the party has zero tolerance for extortionists, terrorists and criminals,” the Rabita committee statement said as it asked the media not to call Qureshi an MQM worker.
The party demanded that the government take action against Qureshi.
PTI's Mazari said that this was the deadliest incident of extortion by a political party in the urban centre of Sindh.
“With this revelation, clearly the party is now less of a political force and more a mafia organisation that has let loose a reign of terror in Karachi that resulted in the Baldia Town factory fire, and in daily target killings in the city,” Mazari added.
The PTI information secretary demanded the state immediately act against ‘mafia organisation’ and expose its political front which provides a cover for lethal mafia operations of the MQM.
The state must also encourage other victims of MQM extortions and other mafia activities to come forward, so that an end is put to such activities which have destroyed the very fabric of Pakistan's financial and industrial hub, Karachi, she said.

Its a case of "he said - she said'! Its called hearsay!
ofcourse failure has no father, he would have owned and cherished by MQM if he wasnt caught or successful in extortion! Why this minister and ex prime minister are not tried in this case too! MQM certainly cant disown its own minister!
"MQM disowns Rizwan Qureshi"
Expect 2 headlines soon: 1) Extortion suspect shot dead while fleeing custody. 2) MQM rejoins Sindh government.
PMLN Supporter here and I fully support and endorse this PTI stand.
Everyone knows MQM is behind the distruction of Karachi! But no one has the guts to say something against. If the government of Pakistan is so scared of MQM that they can't put hand on them at least support those who has the gutts to say somthing!
@awaam: Sure...MQM has never resorted to Bhatta and extortion? I am not a PTI worker but I admire the inquiry officer and Imran Khan for saying the facts as I had to leave Karachi due to mayhem created by MQM in 90s.
The report, in my view, is part of the series of conspiracy moves against the MQM. PTI must have read the story beyond this before accusing the accused. To me it does not make sense that the accused party which after all is a political party would kill its own people of Karachi for some money. They could be involved in the targeted killing, nonetheless, But they too are being targeted. NOT? Hence, I tend to agree to what awaam has to say.
Dear admin of Express tribune , please ban the indian guy Aman kumar for his pro ttp comments and getting happy peshawar school attack , more inhumane indians are coming on this page who have so much hatred against our country. Altaf Hussein can't be tried by the evidence we have. These kind of comments only alienate Urdu speaking community.
Party of the "common man" ironically also kills the most common men. Shame on MQM. They've officially lost any sympathy I ever had for them in the past.
@awaam: Please get your facts straight. PTi only blames that the police is politicized and not all law enforcement agencies. And it is a known fact that sindh police is under political influence.
Only PTI have gutts to say that otherwise our federal & provincial govts are getting them into the govt.
PTI thanks to imran khan is turning out to be a stupid party, blame the founder strainght
PTI always blames law enforcement agencies for being politicized, incompetent and corrupt but are ready to believe all their findings when it comes to MQM, its called double standards - right folks
What a daring stance by a political party, even substantial vote bank in Karachi at its disposal,
