Dialogue between the countries was suspended last year after the high commissioner’s meeting with Hurriyat leaders.
According to sources, Basit is set to make a ‘courtesy call’ to the new foreign secretary. However, they believe that talks between the two countries could be revived on Jaishankar's advice to the Indian government.
The report added that a fresh round of dialogue between India and Pakistan could start once the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party form the government in Indian-administered Kashmir. Some members of the PDP are allegedly in favour of dialogue with Pakistan.
Pakistan’s former national security adviser Major General (retd) Mahmud Durrani also met NSA Ajit Kumar Doval and Jaishankar this week and may have brought a message from Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, according to a source privy to the development. Durrani’s meetings, sources believe, could have been efforts to normalize relations between the neighbouring countries.
Both Indian officials and Pakistan High Commussion dismissed the Durrani’s meeting as a move to revive dialogue.

@BCCI:
Dude not only I am awake but on the ball as well albeit in the very same era!
The problem is some of us are so shrouded in self hate and make belief defeatist attitude that we react hastily when some naked truth confront us.
Let me give you an example, just after capturing Kabul in 2001 US ditch all Pashtun Elements of Taliban and chided Pakistan for not doing so, 12 years after the very same US not only negotiated with Taliban for the release of his captive soldier but also term as Afghan Taliban as Separatist rather Terrorist. So, geopolitical situation is not a constant, it is a variable & right now this variable is in very fluid tendency.
Jammu & Kashmir does not need billions of investment from India, has it been the case then India was investing infrastructure in Kashmir for the last 2 decades all this development is either to secure Airbases, heavy Bridges, tunnel for alternate routes, besides, where was all those developments when valley was flooded recently.
Pak CAN coke & lock Indian military in Jamu & in Valley if Pak occupies Jammu through Sialkot only geographical obstacle is River Tawi, and India knows it. Just like Pak has locked India in Siachen while blocking Kargil.
And when ever did India ever let live Kashmiris in peace, even the beloved Umar Adbullah was yapping time to time. Seriously?
Cheers, game on.
Heard that no one is answering calls from Basit. He may be talking about the terrorist separatist of Kashmir.
Best move by Modi administration. Keep silence and let the opponent twist and turn in suspense.
@Asad Khan:
Brother, I should be asking you this question - "Which ERA are you living in"
The UN, US, NATO, OIC, etc etc are least concerned about Kashmiris..Theyre worried about Terrorism, ISIS, Daesh, Al Qaeda and of course, Pakistan. India is the last point of concern.
India has invested Billions in Kashmir..to develop Hydro Power projects, dams etc. The LOC is the defacto border. No negotiations will change this equation buddy.
The only option is to Militarily force India out of Kashmir. Do you really think this will happen?? Do you seriously believe your army can pull this off?? I mean be practical and tell me. For arguments sake lets assume it happens. Do you think India will let the Kashmiris live peacefully? I mean seriously dude!! WAKE UP!!!
Cheers!!
As expected, Pakistan may grandstand for its public consumption, but it will be the first one to approach India for talks. India is very clear, it has no time for talks with Pakistan as long as Pakistan is not serious. To show seriousness India had demanded Pakistan to stop terrorist infiltration across the border and action against LeT chief Hafeez Sayed. First condition is fulfilled the second one is under process.
@Ishan:
Which planet are you from mate, Has the Kashmiri public unanimously accepted the accession? and if yes then by which method? Has UN removed the Kashmir Dispute from its agenda from annual review? Has 6 Lakhs Indian forces are gone to their respective Cantonments in some cases which are located as far in Nagaland?
For your shallow ignorance, Hurriyat or Cong being in power or not in power is not a big issue, the issue is Unification of Jammu & Kashmir to the rest of Republic of India which still unsettled.
I am actually against this even courtesy call. Every gesture, silence or talk is part of diplomacy in foreign affairs.
Another futile & wishful attempt by this NS govt failing to realize that without core issue on the agenda any talks will be meaningless.
regards,
No, we should not. Let US put pressure on India to resume dialogue.
Restarting any talks with Pakistan will be a big mistake by Modi. We have nothing to gain by this.
Let the talks resume. Increase trade and mutual dependence. Kashmir is a dead issue and so avoid it. No Hurriyat, Cong is out of power.
