Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit China in May, the foreign minister said on Sunday during her own three-day visit to Beijing.
“Mr. Modi is going to come in May. I will give them dates today. This is a preparatory visit,” Sushma Swaraj told Indian reporters in Beijing, according to the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency.
Swaraj is holding three-way talks with her Chinese and Russian counterparts during the trip, her first official visit since she took office last year.
US president Barack Obama last week paid a high-profile visit to India aimed at bolstering ties between the two countries, which share an interest in curbing China’s growing regional influence.
Although neither side mentioned China by name during Obama’s three-day visit, the US president welcomed what he called a “greater role for India in the Asia-Pacific” and said freedom of navigation in the region must be upheld.
Modi is widely seen as taking a more assertive line on China than the previous government.

@WinChin: India is so poor that India Ended Polio among 1.3 billion people. India is so poor that India had successful Mission to Mars. India is so poor that it Built a software industry from nowhere. 20 years ago, Indian software industry was almost non-existent. Now, it has grown more than 100 times in 20 years. In the next decade, India would have a few dozen billion dollar software companies. India is soo poor that Over 200 million people have been brought out of illiteracy. India is soo poor that it has Golden quadrilateral and other new highways - Over 40,000 km of highways/expressways added in the past 15 years.
Riches of winchin ( winpaki) is shown by abundance of petrol and electiricty. awesome. lol.get new life dude winchin.
India is implementing awesome diplomatic strategy across the globe, starting with neighbors (excluding Pakistan) and then Germany, USA, Russia and now China. Coming later this year will be France, UK and Brazil. India is on path of constant growth and focus on making in India. Way to go for Indian democracy success and bilateral relations with global powers. I am saying powers so few neighboring countries should not mind. Hope they chase down their petrol and electricity issue first.
@Maxx.: Well whatever makes you happy dude. But if you ever have a chance in your life to visit Bangalore to see campuses of Cisco, IBM, TCS, Infosys etc. I am sure you would have to bite your tongue. . There would hardly be any IT giant that does not have huge center in India. Also, a call center employee needs some skill too...that is called skill in conversational English. The point you should ponder over is why these IT giants are not in Pakistan instead of fighting a case for China. I think Pakistanis are quick to jump on the case of China since they themselves don't have anything substantial to brag about their own country. Hence the only fun you guys have is by comparing India and China. It tells about the sorry state of Pakistan and its citizens. China is no hunky dory country as you may portray it to be. Imagine this, one morning some govt. people come to you house and tell you that you have to vacate your house and move to another place. Thats what happens in China. There is no way it can happen in India.Nevertheless, India is on the job to move forward and things move slowly because of democratic set up but it does move and while you are fighting the case of China, India would move further.
@Kam: the country which is living on alms, donations and aid has too high opinion about itself
@WinChin:
You are not representing our great country China well. China is already the biggest economy in the world and the greatest military power. Western media does its best to distort these facts and make America greater that it is.
The fact that you don't seem to be aware of these facts makes me wonder if you really are a Chinese. You must be one of those Hong Kong guys.
Guys, Winchin is a Pakistani guy. I can sense it from his sentence structure. Faking his identity.
@WinChin China arable land is barely 15% while India arable land is 52% what good is a land that is of no use. Majority of urban development is only on west and southeast of China. Rest is very rural. China and India relations are bound to grow, you will see a lot of Chinese in Indian IT companies while the presence in Pakistan is probably zero. India will never compromise relations with China. In fact in today's time India will have a balanced relationships with China, US and Russia. It's the time of economic development, trade and human development index only. China will always be more powerful than India and India is quite aware of it and unlike Pakistan knows its limitations which has been trying to equate with India since the last 67 years and is the primary cause of failure.
@ Anon
Let me tell you another the role Pakistan played in 80s made US sole super power. The role Pakistan playing for China today for example by giving them Gwader totally made all US plans monitoring trade routes to China has all been disrupted. Pakistan withstood terrorism for more than a decade while other stable countries like libya egypt syria iraq collapsed due to terrorism in months. Terrorism have cost US its super power status like USSR Pakistan almost controlled this menace and winning. And bottom line is king makers are powerful than Kings. Massive propaganda against Pakistan wont change facts and history books.
Pakistan’s habit of singing in China’s tune is old one. They feel themselves proud in whatever great China do. Pakistan feels proud comparing India with China, because they cannot compare their own country even with Bangladesh. China intrudes Indian borders, Pakistan claps. China launches rocket to moon, Pakistan dance with joy. China launches 13000km long range missile, Pakistan feels proud and joy. Of course parasites always feel happy with their hosts. But they can be vulnerable if hosts take a round of disinfectant. Pakistan feels a strange sense of happiness and pleasure when China is compared in a superior position to India. Even up to the extent of merging Pakistan with China. Poor Pakistani people gets immense happiness when Pak-China praises the deeper than the ocean and higher than the mountain friendship. Every Pakistani sings that tune and enjoys. Next Pakistan compares and threatens India with China’s nuclear missiles. Then the military comparison starts. Only god knows what kind of pleasure Pakistan gets from this comparison? Even India has good relations with the USA. Indian’s should start laughing at Pakistan comparing Pakistan with the USA. But Indians fortunately don’t experience any happiness or pleasure when USA is compared superior to Pakistan. Because Indian’s will only be happy when India achieves the power itself and becomes stronge.
@WinChin: Have you heard the revised figures that IMF also agrees with? India has been growing faster then China and will grow faster in the next year onwards. So what? China is taking notice for a reason. Think what you like, we are a free nation not a dictatorship and it takes time for things to change in India.
We have Chinese refugees living in India and have a few Chinatowns dotted around India and the largest Tibetan refugee population in the world in India. How many Indians are going across as refugees trying to escape oppression?
I bet this will not be published as it challenges the views about India v China.
Can I ask why ET is not publishing stories like the one below?
http://www.news.com.au/travel/travel-updates/video-of-girl-humiliating-alleged-molester-on-indigo-plane-flight-in-india/story-fnizu68q-1227206112683
In response to this where will the foreign minister (army chief) visit in may to US or to Russia or they test another missile at that time
Why is it of any business of Pakistan if the PM of India goes to China? Why should Pakistanis feel slighted? Pakistan should stop worrying about India and only concern with their welfare. Pakistan has many problems and it should not add parity and competition with India to them.
@hamza khan:
Other than the British, India was occupied by some really backward people. The Mughals from Uzbekistan and the Turks from Northern Iran. Both have a history and a present of total backwardness. It was one of the quirks of history that they were able to occupy India at a time of weakness. Similar to how a small Mongol tribal leader like Chengis Khan was able to conquer large territories including entire China. So, the question of "huge inferiority complex" does not arise.
The huge inferiority complex is when one follow their conqueror's religion, culture and use their name even after being free. ;)
India's economy is about 10 years behind China. China was about $1.9T in 2004, India is about $2.0T in 2014. In another 15-20 years, India will have the same size economy as that of China. Remember, that in 1980, China's economy was less than that of India and in 1990 it was equal to India. India has fallen behind because it elected a socialist Govt for the last 10 years which damaged its growth very badly.
When they read of India's progress in Pakistan they talk as if they are Chinese themselves lol...ask a Chinese national or a business man which of the two countries would they rather visit or do business with..I think everyone knows the answer to that. India and Chiba both are making progress ..Pakistan adds a strategic dimension in form of bait for the Chinese nothing more.
@hamza khan: The courage with which India fought British for freedom got rid of any lack of confidence India had. Certainly no one except Zaid Hamid and his chelas think Indians have inferiority complex is-a-vis Pakistan. Remember 95% of Indians today were born in independent India andhave no recollection of anything else.
@Maxx.:
when you've been ruled by outsiders in your own country for 800 years it makes a good case for a huge inferiority complex :)
@someone: IT in India is much more about cyber coolies than anything else, 98 percent of the total of so called IT strength is actually call center, low tech(no tech rather) jobs. Open in Google search any image of Chinese cities, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Chengdu, HongKong, and you can see the town planning, cleanliness, modernity yourself. BTW you are still delusional about HongKong not part of P.R.C. The youtube vidoes are normally of events which are rare and that goes viral. So a couple of videos cannot be a major fact, just to separate fact from fiction. New Delhi ranks as the dirtiest city in the world, with a pollution index of 160 CPCM. Your fiction about low tech in China also doesn't holds much ground. Over a period of 30 years about 300,000 Chinese have returned to China from US and from other countries, from the best universities of the world like Yale, MIT, Harvard, NJIT, Berkley, so on and so forth, with cutting edge technology and that is the reason for China's rise, nothing fluke and artificial about it.
@WinChin: Well For cleanliness, I think you should watch some youtube videos where chinese are poopping and peeing on metro stations and how the resident of Hong Kong are tired of rude, arrogant, manner less Chinese. Now if IT giant of US are using India for cheap labor then you should be aware that manufacturing giant of US are using China not because it is technologically more advance but because of cheap labor and I think it needs more intellectual to make a software rather than making lets say Barbie doll in a sweat shop in China. The whole Chinese economy is based on export to US/Europe and it does not take long to shift the manufacturing plant from one location to another. Moreover, China just assembles the parts. They are manufactured in Japan/Korea/Taiwan. All these three countries are not having very good relations with China while India is building up good relations with them. If these countries decided to shift assembling to India, that would be it for Chinese dreams.
@ A J Khan - "Modi after signing deal of strategic and military encirclement of China, wants to convey that the deal is not against them."
That's called diplomacy, where your nation's interest are paramount... Unfortunately Pakistan is light years away as far as diplomacy is concerned. Hence it ends up playing the role of vassal state for America, Saudis, China and hurts itself.
Economy Vs Honey, sugar, oceans and mountains...
@Sid:
Proof of India’s obsession on Pakistan is evident from the number of Indian trolls comments
You here too the same comment. What do u wanna prove That India Is a poor County? It's not gonna be poor if u said so but yes it's true that we stil have millions of poor people but we are doing our best to lift them up. U don't have to worry if u r Chinese n if u r Pakistani no need t worry bcoz there are much job vacancies right now from various Terrorists groups dude join them n be happy. @WinChin:
Either Pakistan compete India in race of Development or may be it can join and feed various terrorist organisations to destroy itself. China is fighting its war through Pakistan and Pakistanis are fool who laid in the trap designed by China to destroy their own country.
@WinChin But why are you comparing. When Indian and Chinese don't compare or talk such things when they meet? Both are busy doing partnership and business to take ties next level for mutual benefit. Right now russia, india are in China for RIC trilateral discussing joint orbit space station, investments and trade between three countries, form joint strategies for developing world against developed world. Who's got time for animosity? You have nothing of your own so jump on China bandwagon. Are you a Chinese colony?
@WinChin: Agreed 100%. Indians are the world leaders....in bragging, boasting, to swagger and sings own praise kind of behavior. Its runs in their blood...have witnessed it in USA. Can't help it.
Read comments of any Indian on any forum and you will know. Agreed and second it.
@WinChin: The stupidest mistake you are making here is comparing an authoritarian regime to a democracy.Can you enlighten me how many years China was under foreign invasion? why xianjiang Muslims are shot without even a court procedure?What happened in tiananmen square?what is happening to Hong Kong democracy protests?why dalai lama is living in exile if your China was so great.Where is religious freedom in china.When you compare the economic status compare the back grounds as well.Qatar,Kuwait, Brunei etc got more GDP than China. I have worked with Chinese. I know exactly what the common Chinese man is going through.
@WinChin: Usa,russia,israel,Japan are already transferring india hi tech, high end technology. Now they are going towards joint cooperation projects and talks on many initiates are already started. Solar,nuclear,hydro,metro,smart cities,defence, manufacturing. Update yourself. All of things you mentioned like Satti etc have been already been abolished since constitution formed. And the CM of Bihar is a Dalit. So was former CM of UP. Our constitution is written by one too. You have no clue about others country and just want to pass your prejudices when reality is far from it. In every country people break laws and do illegal things. But the system is fair and they are punished with jail terms for committing such crimes. Doesnt USA have hate crimes etc? But Justice is served. Now compare that to your country where too there is open defecation, polio, crimes, and crimes against oppressed communties .What initiative has been taken? How many have been convicted for crimes? Don't behave like case of sour grapes. Appreciate other countries progress. Learnt from it and adopt.
@Ramachandran: Are you sure what are you typing and bragging about, the only thing India is ahead of China(bragging and boasting). China has a per capita GDP of 6807 USD, India has a per capita GDP of 1498 USD. It means China per capita income is more than 4 times that of India. Google search and don't write false claims kindly.
@Ramachandran: To be, would be, may be, could be, should be, might be are all good jargon initiated by IMF, WB, corporate giants who want to use India for their cheap labor and to make it like USA or Europe. They are using it just as a client state....no transfer of hi-tech, high end technology. The reported IMF more growth, I guess it is 6.8% compared to 6.7% of China somewhere in 2017. Many people don't know this slowdown is deliberately induced in Chinese economy..going through lot of planning and future trajectory, turning into a high tech economy. Can go full throttle anytime. Ever heard of looking in retrospect.
@ak: Your deliberations proved my points to quite an extent. It is delusional, hot-headed, far-from-reality thinking which was mostly injected Indians through western capitalist/corporate giants knowing about the population, the youth bulge and sell their products to the Indian middle class(which they though were much bigger) and woken to the reality that it is nowhere close to the skewed figures given by MMS and earlier government. It was about the reality check and nothing else. Your mention about freedom issues in China is lopsided. I can mention about the skewed gender ratio(12 million female foetides in the last many years), Huge caste based system, a few 5 percent of the population rules 95 percent of the country, Brahmins, Shuddars, S.C low caste...this is just unbelievable and disturbing. Rituals are taken as spirituals, killing of newly weds(satti), The concept of cleanliness, throwing litter and using roads and lanes as toilets are considered as freedom. The largest number of people in the world defecating in the open, I guess it is also your idea of freedom. More homeless people than anywhere in the world, can be seen in Mumabi, 62 percent of Mumbai population lives in slums, same in other cities. China is a difference class altogether. BTW HongKong Hong Kong is part of China and its part of the P.R.C but it operates under a "One country, two systems" policy.
We Indians should learn from the quiet chinese who underplay their strengths and dont issue bombastic statements. India hopefully will have good relations with all countries and our new foreign secretary Jaishankar who is known for his what else diplomatic skills should help in furthering China's investments into India. Pakistan should follow what Hussain Haqqani has written in his most recent article.
@WinChin: Means you have already accepted the reality of your country vis via india. Since there was no comparison in the first place. Now you want to jump on other countries back and compete with india. What does that tell about the state of affairs your country? Even with India's poor are richer than you. Compare both country's per capita income you will get your answer. China is not a democratic country. It can only be compared with fellow autocratic country like russia. Where government orders everything. India can only be compared with democracies where there is both healthy opposition,free media,judiaciary and elected government to pass opposed bills in parliament. Even if you insist comparing "India's GDP growth rate to surpass China in 2016" -IMF. "India to be worlds fasted growing economy in world surpassing China"- world bank.
NS is now complaining....... ++++++++++++++++++++++++ Namo is travelling more than NS......and whatever travelling NS could do is also hogged by COAS.
@WinChin: Where was China 40years Back? Was there a competition with US
people align of to strategic co-operation not based on existing , but based on potential Sure India has large number if poor people (but not the number you mentioned, which is wrong by any standards, would advise you to do more reading before citing any data), but kindly also check the demographic advantage (young versus old population of china), skills (language as well as scientific), government (open versus closed), diplomatic outreach (democracy versus authoritarian and closed)there are many other factors. Do read World Banks and other economic indicators based on some realistic measure which portrays Indian growth rate to exceed that of china, and if (big if) it continues , would very quickly narrow the gap
You are forgetting one very big thing thing,hardly anyone likes china (the government), but India has many friends. So if its capable , ti can do business very easily.
So yeah, there can be comparison (Agree that china is much ahead of India currently), and India is on the right track..
P.S.: I lived in china for a while, and let me tell you i find even countries like Thailand, Indonesia much better than china as far as living experience is considered. A pathetic regressive place, no freedom , no discussion.Went to HK and gave a sigh of relief.
@WinChin: Same for India and Pakistan.
@WinChin: Pakistanis now also disguise as Chinese in ET forums ?? New low dude.
Proof of Pakistan's obsession on India is evident from it's newspapers which focuses so much on India. Modi is PM and unlike the ministers in Pakistan it is the civilian leader and not military leader who visits leaders of another nation and talk business and diplomacy. A skill which Pakistan lacks and is evident in the way Raheel does global tour and not Nawaz Shareef for talks with leaders. @A J Khan: Be delusional my friend. Soon there will be defense ties between India and China and Pakistan will seriously die of heartache to know that not even its sweeter than honey is standing by it now. Nobody wants to be a friend of liability. And Pakistan has become liability. Better you guys understand and fix your ways rather than dreaming on Kashmir and bleeding India with thousand cuts.
@A J Khan: He's not going for convincing anything. China didn't even ask foriegn minister Sushma Swaraj about america. It said it wants india to have good relations with all and won't interfere. Infact Chinese president broke protocol and met foriegn Minister Sushma. One it rarely does for any country, that tells you how much importance china pays to the relations. Modi is going there for business and industrial park investments opening more of Chinese economy to india. If China won't invest as per India's expectation, india will put anti dumping charges and taxes on cheap Chinese products to india. Something detrimental to China. Thus bargaining from both the sides to get best deal for both countries. From China's side, China wants india to be part of Silk Road, silk marine routs plan. Doubtful india will agree.
With just 300 millon middle class people out of a population of 1300 million people, means about close to 1 billion poor people in India. India is super poor and they think 'make believe' they are a super power. China is a 12 trillion USD economy compared to just 2 trillion USD for India, with the same population. No comparison. Also China had a land mass which is 3.5 times bigger than India.
Tribune is now a Indian news website.
Modi after signing deal of strategic and military encirclement of China, wants to convey that the deal is not against them.
